Hello! I'm relatively new to the hobby and tabletop in general. I started back in June with playing hordes, then some blood bowl and infinity later in the summer. I've got about 14 games total under my belt but assembled/painted about 80 models over my summer vacation before I sadly had to leave all my models behind to travel to a small island for school. I'll be moving to Knoxville for clinical year in January but my brother is wanting me to play 40k (even though he has yet to play it) he's got a tau army and I'm considering getting the Eldar Start collecting box to get going I might not devote full resources into building an army just yet, as I have very little knowledge of the game so I thought I'd join the forums and do some reading in the very little off time I have.

Hey, nice to see another new (if prospective) Eldar player! My introduction is just under yours, but I'll go ahead and welcome you anyway!

I chose Eldar for the aesthetics, pure and simple. I love the Eldar look generally, and the grav tanks especially. I always encourage people to go for what they like in a game, and if you like the Start Collecting Eldar it's a good buy. It's what I got first too.

Awesome! Thanks for the welcome and nice to see someone else starting up with Eldar. I was definitely drawn in by the same things about them and have been kind of following the same rules for picking a faction. I was kind of considering going mostly mechanized since trollbloods and caledonian highlanders are light on mechanized death, but we'll see as I get into the game starting in December.

I'd be tempted to hold off on purchases till the Eldar Codex drops next month, and fingers crossed for some plastic Aspect Warriors

Oh cool I had no clue about the codex, I just knew that 8th edition had dropped over the summer, I'll hold off then not like I can actually lay hands on them until this semester is over anyways. Thanks!

Welcome. I started playing Eldar many years ago for the same reason and still do to this day.

They are awesome models and very aesthetically please to field and paint.

Eldar main here, welcome! They're a blast to play.

As an aside, I'm not a big fan of the Start Collecting box in the current meta - a lot of the units in it are currently overpiced. It might be a little easier/more powerful to build an army from other units.

Thanks everyone! Huskywarhammer do you consider the start collecting box overpriced in points or money?
Edit: Never mind I read your post again came off a long school day with a farm visit so not reading clearly.

All the Start Collecting sets are among GW's better deals when it comes to models for your money, but the Eldar box was definitely a lot stronger last edition in game terms. That may or may not change with the codex, however, which is why it's definitely wise to wait until it's out before you start an Eldar army.

I've fared well against my friends with both Farseer Skyrunners, Windriders (Shuriken Cannons) and Night Spinners (clearly better than Fire Prism now) in 8th, but that's mostly due to my lists being more thought-through and me getting first turn. Anyway, you won't auto-lose for taking them or anything.

If the codex doesn't drastically change things I'd recommend a Wave Serpent (really solid), Wraithguard, Guardians (not that impressive, but they're Troops), and/or anything you particularly like. Be sure to get HQ and Troops, they are the base on which lists are built.

Ah alright buying some troops (Guardians) and an hq was my other idea for starting out anyway and I saw good things about the wave serpent so that was my next planned purchase. I'll still wait to see about the new codex changes.

your mind

Buy and collect what you like. Start small. Small games are best in my opinion.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

I know y'all were saying wait but when I got the email about the new codex and the new start collecting box I got a little excited. I called my FLGS pre-ordered those two things as well as a bonesinger. The models just look like a lot of fun to paint to me so I'm looking forward to starting when I get home in December

The new Start Collecting Craftworlds is a really good buy, you'll need the codex, and the Bonesinger is a very special model. You won't regret buying any of these. I'm getting them all myself.

Happy building and painting!
