Say i have any variation of General be it foot, horse or griffon with a load out of say sword and stately war banner or lets say a great weapon something 2 handed. Can i still use the shield as im going down my war scroll? or do i have to physically be able to wield it.

Also when it comes to Great Companies say i have my 20 Freeguild Guard (G) 30 Freeguild Handgunners (H) and 30 Freeguild Crossbows (C) as my Great Company and we have our random bad guy models (B) and (D). (B) charges into (G) and is within 3", (B)'s charge is over (H) and (C) is within 3" of (B) but (H) is engaged by (D). (H) and (C) are withing 6" of each other. Can they both still shoot (B) even though one is engaged.

To answer the equipment side of things, here's the options;
-Great Weapon
-Hand Weapon & Shield
-Lance & Shield (mounted only)
-A shield may be traded for a pistol
-A banner may be taken in addition to anything else

Don't have my GHB on me but maybe Bottle will appear since he's the local Freeguilder on the forum.

As to your other question i don't think your handgunners can fire if they are engaged, I don't have my book on me but I thought it was one of their conditions to have enemy further than 3".

Thanks for the info guys make sense on the shield. And for the Great Companies that sounds about right just wanted to verify says in the book "The unit lending support is more than 3" from the enemy" "The unit being supported is within 3" from the enemy" and "The two units are within 6" of each other",

You can't have a shield with a 2-hander, but you can have a shield with a banner or a 2-hander with a banner. The banner is auto-take on all generals because it is in addition to any other equipment they carry. One of those dumb things that comes up when all equipment options are free.

I took Lance and Banner on my General on Horse wasnt sure if i could get a Shield in for that 3+ save. But now that its clarified i alas can not

Lance replaces the one handed sword, which can be used with a shield. The banner does not replace the shield. A model CAN have both a banner AND a shield.
