So a friend of mine has tried to sway me towards running imperial alpha strike list/s. are they actually any good? i've always been of the opinion that if they work they work but when they don't go off you're at a huge disadvantage.

That pretty much sums it up. One of my regular opponents runs it pretty often and against my two lists it has a 10% success rate, however against Miranda/Dash it has a 80% rate. Can also be pretty good against Biggs reliant lists, but generally I do not rate it as its easy to counter, so very dice dependent and after the alpha you have three middling ships.

See i'm not completely sold them. once you unload what do you have left? i would think that having your primary attack would be better in the long run and would allow for more "stuff" in your list upon saving ordinance etc.

Is a 10% expense into the alpha-strike worth sacrificing other tools? I don't think so. The alpha-strike also tends to colour your view of the battle, where you either rush or miss another opportunity.

In general, and alpha strike will usually be a great success, or a crippling failure, with little middle ground. If you have an entire list built around that, and it works, the game can be over in a handful of rounds, but if it fails, good luck coming back from that.

Shadowrun is the best game ever. It's the only thing I have ever played in which I have jumped out of a shot out van with a chainsaw to cut a flying drone in half before leveling a building with ANFO assisted by a troll, a dwarf, an elf, and a wizard.

I've had fun with this, just keep everyone relatively tight to the bomber

I'm with the general consensus its a bit of a rock/paper/stone coin flip, but I think the high PS version(Vader, QD, Quiz etc) might be the most stable version, especially if the SLAM faq happens

High PS is definitely mandatory. Low-PS alpha strike lists struggle to get their target locks set up, and with cruise missiles there's no option to try again next turn. If you miss you're lock it will probably be several turns before you can set up another speed-4 approach.

High PS is often expensive. You need to field as many ordnance platforms as possible.

It doesn't matter. Anything below PS 9 is worthless for cruise missiles, and you really want PS 11 on at least two of your three ships. Having a million TIE bombers with cruise missiles at PS 2 is less of an alpha strike than Vader at PS 11 against most of the meta, since the bombers will never be able to get their target locks on the initial pass.

Even if you get locks on with LRS for example, it can be hard to keep a target in line, you have to move first, and Vader or the Inquisitor will be able to avoid arc on the missile shots with boost or barrel rolls, so the 4 or 5 Cruse missles you have to shoot them with, might end up being one or two, and even then, Inquisitor and Vader go first. A big part of an alpha strike if that you NEED to go first.

I've run a four advance tie prototype list with homing missiles several times with a fait amount of success. Three get to fire at PS 8, the other a four. But if I come up against anyone running PS9 it tends to go down hard. Or if they can survive the initial punch it struggles to finish stuff off. Normally is a case of fly in, kill 1/2 ships then run away to keep the point lead. Playing for time like this isn't much fun for you or your opponent.

it's the quiet ones you have to look out for. Their the ones that change the world, the loud ones just take the credit for it.
