Asking what everyone's experience is with Mantic's battlezone terrain. Looked and saw it was sturdy and cheap, along with having a generic enough look to fit into Infinity.

Does anyone have a size comparison between the terrain and Infinity terrain. Along with that, is Battlezones a decent product for its price point?

Thanks!

I picked up their biggest ruined battlezone set back when it first came out, and I think it's great. It's easy to build and really modular so you can make really big buildings or a bunch of small ones. I built a lot of stuff with it, enough for a tightly packed 4x4 skirmish board, and I still have plenty of panels left over to make more.

The terrain is thinner, lighter, and more generic sci-fi than the stuff GW makes. The aesthetic works fine for Infinity.

Many kits are out of production so finding what you want may be tough. The other issue is that this terrain becomes very cube looking if you don't plan ahead with your project.

I have the industrial sector which has pipes, ruined features, fans, screens, etc. The bits blend well with SW:A terrain and worked well to build a tower for the SW:A construction crane.

It's mostly good, except for the fortified sections. They are hard to mix with other parts due to increased thickness.

Also don't plan on taking them apart much. Better to build a structure and glue it rather than try to deconstruct and make different things between games.

Was not planning on taking it apart. In the future, I kind of want it to be a mix of industrial and urban (plan to do some NeoTerra) so the fortified sections was going to be hands-off for options. Then another board with some jungle features.

I picked up the sprues when they had it as an add-on for the Mars Attacks game. I cannot recall if it was 4, 6 or 8, but I was able to make a number of extra nifty pieces, as they are extremely modular and flexible to make single or multi-level buildings. I was extremely pleased with how they came out.

This is what I did with mine along with using a couple of old GW movement trays as billboards. I think it is great stuff but you need to plan ahead for what you are going to build so you don't run out of bits (especially the connectors). If you're going to build permanent structures and glue it all I would suggest getting a nail file and lightly filing the lugs on the connector pieces to save your fingers some grief as they are a very very tight fit (to stop buildings not being glued together from coming apart). Also, if you file a 45 degree chamfer onto the lugs on the braces which support the ends of the walkways that go between buildings you can clip them on and off without needing to fix them permanently in place.

A couple quick points.

-Very good product at the price point

-Glue it together because it's not sturdy if you don't it will not be sturdy

-If you like the look -which does fit well in alot of settings-, it's cool. I'm not a huge fan of whole structures of the stuff but it's a goldmine for greebling and adding to other terrain projects.

Enjoy.

And unless they fixed the issue, it seemed like you never got enough connectors.

+1 from me for value for money. I can't comment on the fit with Infinity as I don't have any of their terrain, but scale-wise there is not a problem with the minis. As for making it look and feel like infinity, the Mantic stuff is great as a generic basis, and I am sure you could get plenty of fun resin bits and bobs to "Infinity-ise" it up a bit. I got mine from a Kickstarter, and at the time they were selling resin stuff from Antenocitii as add-ons, some of which I bought, and which add bags of character to the layout. If it helps for scale, the squares that the kits are based on are 3" x 3".

Having built a crap ton of the stuff, I would say the problems with there possibly being not enough connectors are easily mitigated. Firstly not every location needs a connector if it is being glued - for instance, a typical square will have two connector points per side - so if you build a 3"x3"x3" 6-sided cube and used every location you would need 24 L-shaped connectors. But you can usually get away with only using one per edge, particularly if it is being built into a larger building with walls all the way around and a roof, which will provide good rigidity, so our hypothetical cube would only need 12 connectors - one for each edge . It is best to build your model with the minimum number of connectors you can get away with first, and then only add in extras sparingly to specific weak points after the shape is complete. That way you won't waste connectors unnecessarily. Also if you do run out, you can buy "L-section" plastic rod from hobby/model/craft stores pretty cheaply and you can cut sections of that into lengths to glue along the line with plastic cement. That will give an incredibly sturdy join.

I echo the comments about the clips being a (deliberately) tight fight. I found that if I applied plastic cement to both sides of the join but waited 30 seconds or so for it to start curing before fitting the clip, they went together with minimal effort as the plastic glue melts the plastic slightly, making it soft enough not to need too much force to join.

Aesthetically, the only drawback I have is that there is often a slight gap between panels if built with clips. This may or may not be a problem depending on your point of view. You certainly don't notice the gap during normal play, but only if you are looking specifically for it, it is there.

I think they now sell the connectors separately, but haven't put any more in the existing kits

Also the Terrain Tutor does a good review and gives some building advice and tips

I have also heard of those that used the tiny zip ties to put together when the connectors ran short, since they did not want them permanently glued together. I used a combo of glue and connectors for the few I did.

I think they've switched manufacturer - I got some more a little while ago (August) and the plastic looks different & they were already clipped off the sprue.

TheTrollTrader still has them in stock (in the UK).

I really enjoy it. Each panel is 3" x 3". Should give you a good ability to gauge size.

Don't expect to take it apart and reassemble. The clips will break. Just glue it together and call it good.

I cant stress this enough, simply glue them together like you would the Citadel Cities of Death terrain

They're great with infinity, easy to paint, and cheap in bulk

I do recommend watching The Terrain Tutor videos on them. Good tips for building but also he has a few that do some little things, that overall improves the look of the terrain (covering connector holes, modifying to build less block terrain, etc).

Alright, thanks for the hints guys! Since I wanted to make the pieces more permanent, I am planning to glue them together. I might give them a brighter paintjob to give them more of an 'Infinity' feel, but it seems like it is a good deal here.

Spoiler:

Battlezones are back! Now under the TerrainCrate banner, we’ve redesigned these hard plastic sets to be better than ever. The main focus is to provide prospective builders with a theme for their scenery, based around a ruined factory or security outpost, for example. However, this does not stop you from creating your own buildings using the new configurations; taking advantage of the modular scenery.

There are 4 new sets available, which you can see below, with many more on the way soon! These are perfect for any Sci-Fi Wargame or Skirmish game, including Warpath and Deadzone!

Industrial Accessories – full of various pipes, conveyor belts, and heavy machinery, this set is perfect to add industrial themed scatter terrain to your tabletop. You could even use these in contemporary settings without issue!

Forgotten Foundry – representing a ruined industrial building, this set can be used to create one decent sized collapsed structure or several smaller pieces of cover. It even includes some of the conveyors and pipes from the accessories set – perfect for a skirmish sized board.

Gang Warzone – everyone knows that you can’t have a good gang war without gantries and walkways! This set includes loads of these, plus barricades, scatter terrain, and enough parts to build towers to hold everything up. This would be great for your Deadzone Strike Teams to fight over.

Ruined City – with enough terrain for a wargaming table, this set is full of ruined and intact building components, plus extra scatter terrain to be used as cover in your games. You could use this to fully cover a Deadzone board, or to create several buildings for a Warpath board, including both ruined and intact structures.

These new sets are available to pre-order now from the Mantic Website! What will you be building with yours?
