Surprised this one hasn't been added yet.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1162110258/time-of-legends-joan-of-arc

Time of Legends: Joan of Arc is a narrative miniatures board game that plunges you into the heart of the Hundred Years’ War. In this dark, medieval universe, kings plot for the throne of France, and on the battlefield their heroic knights clash with foes both real and legendary.

For more than a century, from 1337 to 1453, the fields of France rang to the sound of constant warfare. The Hundred Years’ War is one of the longest wars ever fought and is the source of many of our collective ideas about heroic knights of old. It was also a time of myths and legends, and a fervent faith in the literal truth of the doctrine of Holy Mother Church. It is this world of strife and faith that this game recreates.

In Time of Legends: Joan of Arc, all the creatures that the medieval people thought were real, are real. Whether they are represented on tapestries, in stained glass windows, or in illuminated manuscripts, we take them at their word. It is this dark and epic universe that you will explore in the game’s many scenarios. Some are historical, with no taint of the whispered legends of strange creatures. Others are replete with the supernatural or (saints preserve us) demonic.

You are free to control the army of miniatures that represent your heroes, knights and peasants as you wish in order to achieve your goals. You will decide who moves and where; whether your forces explore, pray, converse with locals, or simply charge into battle. But before we get to the field of glory, you must first choose your side.

It's been skulking around on the Board Games subforum, which is bizarre; there's no way anything with that dragon in it is skulking anywhere!

I am surprised that it's not more prominent around here, a lot of podcasts have been very complimentary about it from seeing it at GenCon.

Anyway, it funded in three whole minutes and blasted through a big bucketful of stretchgoals in the first 24 hours. I'm looking forward to getting it, a dragon and a castle!

I'm hoping more scenery shows up in the stretch goals.

I like the addition of interior overlays so the fighting can continue inside as well as around the buildings.

Curious as to what kind of add ons we'll see. Not much in the way of demons yet, despite their prominence in the artwork...

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

When does that awesome looking castle show up, and how much will it cost?!?

I'll be giving this one some serious consideration.

The minis at this scale look great!

I think that it has been mentioned that it will be a similar price to the dragon, no idea if it's going to pan out like that, though!

The awesome thing that was said about the castle is the whole seige rules plan; the idea being that the tabletop battle with the troops and castle is the climactic attempt to storm the castle. Leading up to it is a card based game to represent the seige and all the weeks and weeks of preparation: sorties, earthworks building, poisoning the water supply etc. This card game then has effects on the final battle - genius!

From a contents standpoint, this is like BattleLore 1E, but with a LOT more stuff in the box. If I didn't already have boatloads of BattleLore 1E, I'd be all over this.

No idea what BattleLore is - are you saying it is a good game and would recommend this one based on that?

BL has been OOP for years, and has a second edition (which some fans say is incomplete because it doesn't have enough factions?) -- which is also OOP. The game designer and publisher are different, so I would not buy or not buy JoA based on BL.

As JH says, the *contents* of BL and JoA look similar, since they're JoA is medieval fantasy, while BL is generic fantasy. They both somewhat overlap in that they have combat, although JoA has some scenarios that aren't just combat.

Also, ask around The Miniatures Page for 15mm medieval warfare rules if you can't find any. (You can also play many 28mm games, such as Frostgrave, in 15mm.)

I have my brushes full with 28mm, but, if you're looking for a 15mm human-based medieval miniatures starter set, this is it. This is the first popular 15mm game I've seen on KS, and it comes with terrain and game tiles, as well. Although I know papercraft is cheaper, I don't even want to know how much I'd pay for resin or plastic versions of those buildings! Hopefully, Mantic, CMON, and Reaper will release buildings and large pieces for 28mm terrain. Mantic's already run a terrain KS, and Reaper had some large pieces in their KS.

My mind keeps tumbling over what kinds of possible add ons they can release.

More giant monsters and scenery are already a given.

Do you think they'd do a new faction? New armies are always popular add ons for war games, but I can't think of a distinct faction that would be historically accurate that isn't already represented by either the French or English.

Mercenaries perhaps?

Short version: BattleLore is a Command & Colors game (like Memoir 44) by Richard Borg that was originally published by Days of Wonder. It was a 15mm wargame game on a hex game board with a historical focus with an (optional) fantasy element. DoW, unable to do the game justice with their meager means (they couldn't even reprint the base set) sold the rights to Fantasy Flight Games, which released a few small expansions and gave up. FFG then releases Battles of Westeros, a BattleLore game largely in name only, that was good but mismanaged. Then FFG released a 2nd edition that was more FFGish (surge abilities, three different card sizes, full fantasy in the Runewars universe)... then released a few expansions and gave up in favor of Runewars.

BattleLore is probably my favorite board game of all time, and the 2nd edition had potential to be a great game in its own way if FFG didn't prematurely kill it. Joan of Arc has a lot of similarities to BattleLore in theme, form, and gameplay - but does its own thing by mixing in concepts from other board games and miniature games. I swore I would never back another Kickstarter, but I backed Joan of Arc. I think it has a similar potential to become what BattleLore always promised to be, if it wasn't cursed by a decade of mismanagement and being a miniature-heavy product before its time (especially if this isn't the last "Time of Legends" game)

If you watch the trailer for the kickstarter, I think there's some hints in there. They show the castle wall set and at least one giant demon figure that they haven't shown yet.

BattleLore is a Richard Borg "Command and Colors" series game that covers medieval fantasy battles, but can play as straight medieval historical battle as well (if you don't use the fantasy elements like dorfs or dragons, magic and such). It came out over a decade ago, and has been OOP for quite some time. BL is an excellent game system, assuming you're into that sort of thing. I love playing the "advanced" version with the monsters and magic. The hydra is so much fun to play!

I have no idea how JoA plays, but it looks similar, with the hexes and multi-base infantry and GoT-ish blending of medieval fantasy with historical. If you were looking for a 15mm-ish game like like BattleLore / Warmaster to put on the tabletop, it's a very fair price for all of the stuff you're getting. If one were looking for a medieval fantasy battles toolbox, this is the ideal starting point. But again, I have no idea if the game itself is good.

I completely agree that JoA has the potential to be what BattleLore always wanted to be, but didn't have the resources and commit to produce. If the rules end up being good, this will go gangbusters down the line. I clearly foresee expanded Angelic / Demonic forces, along with Undead, Golems and Mercenaries.

If I didn't already have BattleLore, I'd definitely gamble on this. Big time.

There's several videos from GenCon and Beasts of War of them playing the game. Nearly universal praise by people who played it at GenCon and the playthroughs seem competent enough as a gameplay framework. Whether it will be a balanced game in the competitive mode (looks like they've changed some balance since GenCon) or whether there are enough scenarios or the scenarios have staying power, I can't say. It looks like an amazing toolbox, and I hope the designers know well enough when to step back and let the tools do the heavy lifting.

If I didn't already have BattleLore, I'd definitely gamble on this. Big time.
I have all of BattleLore and while I love it to death, it has given me about a decade's worth of blue balls. The problem with BattleLore 1E is that it is primarily scenario based, and while there are many of them throughout the various expansions, there's very few (if any) that actually use all the pieces available at the same time. A serious case of Core + One Expansion-itis (something games like Descent suffer from as well). Call to Arms was meant to generate scenarios, but I don't think it was very good at it, and it was also terrible with allowing you to play with all the toys you wanted to.

This has ticked my boxes backed for the starter and the dragon. If the games good great if not welllll I have cool models for another project and rules system.

BoW have just put up a video for an expansion for old Be'elzebub himself.

http://www.beastsofwar.com/mythic-games/time-legends-joan-arc-devil-rises-ashes/

$30 for one really cool mini and a bunch of extra stuff.

I was wondering how they were going to come up with great ideas for addons. After the dragon and castle, I figured that they'd be struggling for ideas - I should have known better!

This is going to be really tough, trying to work out how to prioritise spending.

In one of the videos, they literally say that "Time of Legends" may have additional games in addition to Joan of Arc taking place in the world at the same time, but in different locations. I don't think they are struggling for ideas.

Same deal as Mythic Battles which they're expanding into a "world" made-up of lots of giant self contained mythologies.

Honestly, I played Mythic Battles at a testing event, and if this is made by the same people I expect the game to be meticulously balanced, with incredible, clear, rules.

That game is SICK.

This is something I'm confused about. Maybe someone can explain this to me. I think Monolith is behind Mythic Battles, but Mythic is involved with them somehow as a publisher. Monolith is the company that won't do retail anymore and will only do Kickstarter games, but Mythic will do retail for ToL:Joan of Arc... but not Mythic Battles?

Mythic battles was a joint venture from Monolith and Mythic.

Time of Legends is only from Mythic.

Monolith are the company who are only releasing via Kickstarter where as Mythic want to release through retail as well.

Probably due to it all being 15mm and not very large, with repeated sculpts outside of the big bad.

The devil I'm guessing is probably around 80/90mm or so, if they haven't actually stated it yet.

I'm liking the included scenery with each expansion so far as well!
