My 8yo daughter has been writing Adventure 'books' in preparation for our Winter Holiday to kill time on the journey. It's all very cute and Harry Potter inspired including games and tales, and it got us to talking about MYOA books that I had when I was a kid (albeit a bit older) like the awesome Fighting Fantasy Books.

So it make me think, can anyone suggest a contemporary version of these, preferably suitable for a 8-10yo. i.e. not horror!

Cheers.

Maybe twine could work if she wants to make her own stories?

No suggestions, but thank you for the warm fuzzy blast of nostalgia. I haven't thought about Fighting Fantasy for years. The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, The Forest of Doom, Caverns of the Snow Witch... good times.

I don't know if these kinds of books are still published except as reprints of older titles for nostalgia purposes. On the other hand, I do see similar things as games in the Google Play store, so you can check there. The Lone Wolf books are freely available online at https://www.projectaon.org/en/Main/Home, but I don't know how suitable they would be for your daughter at her age.

The Mantic one was pretty good, although there are a few bystander deaths that can be a bit disturbing.

Way of the Tiger is like Fighting Fantasy with Ninjas. I would recommend starting with the second one since the first struggled to find it's identity, although it's not bad in itself. Some of the deaths can be pretty brutal, though, so be warned.

That's good news! I prefer the original cover art, but that's probably the nostalgia talking.

Does anyone know much about new author Charlie Higson? I think I've seen him on HIGNFY before.

I was thinking 'how come one of them looks like Charlie Higson??#

That'd be because one of them is Charlie Higson. Notably, Charlie Higson.
