Ok so I have been wanting to get into tallarn for a while now, I have always loved the "desert people" vibe, and now, directly after finishing Dune, and with the new codex, this would be a perfect place to start. I have created a bit of a prototype with Cadian and Catachan bits, but have no ideas for heads. I think it needs a bit more desert to it, you know? Any ideas? Criticism?

There are multiple companies out there that make desert heads. I just bought a bunch from Puppetswar.com. I also considered buying heads with boonie/ANZAC hats on for a more "Westerners in the Desert" feel.

Do the puppetswar heads fit onto cadian bodies? because if so, they look pretty swell

They do.

As a note though...people in the desert rarely go around in tank-tops. You'd be better off using Cadians w/ tallarn heads (or...just buy the tallarn squads). A guy in a tank top, BDU pants and a masked head will end up looking a hell of a lot like some 1980's bad action movie terrorist.

I don't love the Cadian shoulder pads, it feels a bit heavy for the lightly armored tallarn. Thinking about regiments from anvil industries

Yep, there are plenty of alternate resin options - they're mostly more expensive than guardsman, but you'll be better off that way. Honestly, I'd lean heavily toward buying actual tallarn figures.

It would be pretty easy to give your guys Keffiyehs made from green stuff.

I got pile of catachans sitting on my shelf and decided to tallarnify them. Currently I have GS shemaghs on them and few have various sized tunics. Will post pics once I get something done properly.

Ok so presently plan is simply cadians with loads of grenades and puppetswar heads. Anything else to desertify them?

Like ninjapirate and I said, greenstuff shemaghs/keffiyahs.

IMHO id say puppetwar heads, cadien torso, skittari ranger sleaved arms with some green stuff work to add the lasgun hands back on.

or various other 3rd party arms that may work in the same style.

and maybe some wargame factories great coat legs.

Shamless plug for my own conversions!

Cadian legs and arms, Victoria Minatures "Victorian" torsos, sword and lasgun arms for the normal squaddies, Maxmini and Puppets War heads and Kromlech backpacks and Assault Group backpacks/bedrolls . Demo charge is an Ork tankbusta bomb and the various grenades, pouches, canteens, etc are mainly Cadian with a few of Vic's in there too. I spent a lot of time (probably too much!) planning out these conversions...

Nice ideas! I've always stuck with the metal minis. This shows you can achieve great results with conversions though. The problem with mixing and matching components will always be keeping the scale consistent. Best to experiment and see what works before buying parts for a whole army!

In my mind the defining features of the Tallarn model are these:

-Most importantly a headscarf/shemagh/keffiyah/<whatever else they are called>
-Shoulder armour, leather webbing + pouches and water bottle
-Baggy tunic with baggy sleeves
-Puttees (the wraps around the ankles, rather than modern army boots)
-Other accessories like curved sabers and knives, sashes, cloth wraps around gun barrels... etc. Officers dial this up further with even more Arab finery such as coats or capes.

Get as many of these as you can to nail the Tallarn look!

Here's what I've done so far. Mostly just experimenting different techinoques and practising using GS.

Puppets War and Anvil Industries make some great parts for all kinds of stuff.

However as your location flag comes up as USA i would try Mad Robot, similar range of parts but American.

Super!

Best advice I can give for sculpting with green stuff is to get yourself a set of clay shapers. I honestly don't know how I ever managed without them.

Sorry for necroing a thread and double posting but here's what I've done so far. Still got few that need guns, but other than that they're pretty ready to be primed.
