Is there anything that really keeps my opponent from just spamming magic and arrows down on my heroes? I don’t see why people wouldn’t just first chance they get throw all the ranged powers they can at whatever hero their enemy has that has synergy, and just snipe em. Is there a way to avoid my weight kings and necromancers getting plinked to death by arrows and artillery?

NOPE! Not out side of using powers that divert those attacks. This is a problem death has, is they are very relient on their hero's which once they die, your toast. That's how you win at sigmar, snipe your opponent synergy units, it's why I run tzeentch to crap out mortal wounds at range.

To many unpainted models to count.

So is there no reason to ever even consider running a squishy hero?

If the buff they give is really good yeah.

I don't run death, mainly because they are such a weak army right now. Truth be told, if you wanna run death, I would advise you suck it up and buy a morngoul from forge world and let it do most of the work for you. The things is freaking broken.

Bringing models which can completely block LoS/ anchoring your movements around terrain pieces that do the same can go a long way.

If you can, keep your heroes behind scenery. The enemy still needs LoS to target them.

2000 Khorne Bloodbound (Skullfiend Tribe- Aqshy)
1000 Tzeentch Arcanites (Pyrofane Cult - Hysh) in progress
2000 Slaves to Darkness (Ravagers)

Give them a lot of faster major threats to worry about.

Make him not priority to take out.

use Deep strikers (summoning) to take out the shooty stuff.

The balewind vortex makes the range of your spells and summoning 36" and might just be enough to outrange many opponents.(so the necromancer can stay out the firing arc while still doing his thing)

Go for heroes with non command ability buffs, consider taking multiples of the same kind.

Personally, I'd agree on the mourngul.

With that rampaging around most of their shooting will be aimed at that instead.
Given it's reputation, people will target that over your hero's most of the time in an effort to keep it away.

Necromancers can also deflect hits onto nearby skeleton/zombie units. A big issue I see people doing is putting too many eggs in one basket. Their great fighter will be the general with an awesome command trait and a cool artifact. He gets sniped, everything goes downhill. Your general should be a model that's reasonably durable (like a Wight King) that then camps in the back, even monster heroes should be doing this the first few rounds if they are the general. The hero that's a badass fighter/wizard should just do that, while the synergy hero has a defensive artifact. It creates a situation where when some of them die, you always have something left. And some of your heroes will die in almost every game, just like your units.

As an example, here's a common layout I use in my destruction army;
-Firebelly (general with a supportive command trait)
-Moonclan Grot Shaman (powerful caster with a strong spell)
-Ogor Tyrant (strong frontline fighter)
-Ironjawz Megaboss (strong fighter that gets an artifact)

So my general is separate from my main fighter hero who is separate from the hero with an artifact who is separate from the nasty wizard. It's really tempting to make the Tyrant super awesome by being the general and having a cool item, but he would just die and all that would go with him. This way, I'm in a decent spot even if (when) the enemy kills 2-3 of my heroes.

Road to Renown! It's like classic Path to Glory, but repaired, remastered, expanded! https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/778170.page

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.
