Hey Dakka,

I have an acquantaince who has 538 metal vintage minis. Maybe half are Britains. All looked vintage. Now this guy is giving me the hard sell at $10 per mini. Yes. I know its a lot. Too much. He says he has boxes for all of them and i suspect he has boxes for "some". Tonight he at the bar tried to get me to commit to $5k. I just cant. Not because i dont have the cheese but because im CHEAP. I think that they are worth a chunk of change undoubtedly. Included are what appear to be early US artillery trucks. Didnt recognize it. Might be early WW2 or cold war. There are several (3-6) larger peices (howitzers and trucks) that i have never seen, nor are present on ebay. They are 56mm standard, mostly marching bands and dress uniforms.. I can take pics but i am kind of shining him on until taxes in april of 2018. Do any of you have any experience? I like him and hes my neighbor so I dont want to low ball him, but $5k is a $h1t ton of money. I estimate that they are all mid century. Possibly into the 60s.

What do yall think?

PM or respond in thread with any expertise. I should also say that if i can make HIM any more than $5k (if the are wrth big money) that Id be happy to. Im a simple man and would be happy to help my neighbor. For me.... theyre just pretty neato. And old.

Look on ebay. Look on ebay UK too. Have a look at the Britains forum - there's bound to be one. $5k is enough to sour a relationship if one of you shafts the other.

Howitzer prices on ebay today vary from $5 to $350...

A cousin wanted to buy my kids old Lego for £50. I offered half the real ebay sale price - ignoring the "in your dreams" chancers. The cheque ended up being £500... be careful...

Also look for trading groups on Facebook.

I'm a member of a couple of Star Wars groups, and prices are usually much better than eBay. I think it's down to a lack of 'professional' traders, and it just being amongst fans.

I'm currently restoring a Legacy Falcon, with all parts sourced via the FB group. Prices for that aren't cheap, but remain a good deal cheaper than eBay.

I find it useful to sort 'chancer' prices from those actually achievable.

Don't even consider paying that much unless you catalogue and value everything he has. That's way too much money "because you feel like being nice", etc. Absolutely not. Find a value guide or a forum dedicated to the miniatures he has and get a fair value - then offer him what you think is fair.

Don't pay anything for them at all, you don't seem into it.
By all means tell him that you'll help him to sell them on ebay for a percentage.

This...this times 1000 well actually $5000... you have $5000 reasons to NOT do this deal. I mean if you are a millionare and 5k is nothing to you and you like the figgies and want to help him out.... well cool. BUT BUT BUT most normal people don't have $5k kicking around to help a neighbour out just because.

Catalog all the models, post them in FB groups like MDG said. Look around, Ask around. Any amount of money can ruin a friendship. Is your friendship with him worth $5k?

Thats like 5 warlord titans from FW with weapon arms.....or if you just want to throw money away I can give you my paypal addy....I KNOW 2 warlord titans 4 reavers and 3 warhounds would make a awesome addition to my mechanicus army

And there is nothing wrong with being cheap.... Don't fall for the hard sell and please be careful, dude seems like he thinks you are on board with it and its just price you are haggling on. Please talk to this guy sober and some people totally change when drunk. If he knows you have a wack of cash kicking around well I have been watching a lot of unsolved murders lately and people kill for really strange reasons but money is near the top and a lot less then $5K
