Okay guys, I have been pondering jumping back into Warmachine and think I am ready to price out an army. Haven't played and of Mk.III since I had sold off all my stuff due to a lack of opponents in the area I moved to. We had a few players move into the area, and I am honestly getting bored of 40k (again). So, the army I have been most interested in since I started in Mk.I was Mercenaries but never got around to it.

Was thinking of Dwarves, but I really want to play Magnus 1&2, and Damiano.

Was thinking of running The Irregulars Theme Force since there are some models/units I have always wanted to use, so here was what I was thinking of as must buys for the army.

Warcasters:
-Magnus1
-Magnus2
-Captain Damiano

Warjacks:
-2 Renegades
-Freebooter
-Rocinante

Units:
-Everything Steelhead
-Sam MacHorne & the Devil Dogs (Marshalling a Freebooter)

Solos:
-Gorman
-Stannis & Nick

I don't plan on buying a Colossal, and don't plan on running Sam with Damiano. Ideally want the Magnuses to share a good amount of units, it'd be nice to have Damiano share a few as well, so... Help me make an army! Looking for lists for 25, 50 and 75 points.

This list slays. If you want to take ranged assassination off the table, replace the talon with a buccaneer to knock Damiano down with feign death.

Oh wow. I like that! Thank you, I had been contemplating going Kingmaker with Damiano and Magnus2, but couldn't wrap my head around all the Merc units and solos yet since I only had experience using a small handful of the Solos that Khador could take.

So do you not really bother with Sergeant Nick, Stannis or the Heavy Cav? The Cav seemed a bit lacking, but I liked the look of Stannis (if gotten for free).

Is this list mainly relying on the smoke bombs from the Trenchers to advance up the board safely?

It's hard to ever justify Nick. Stannis is ok, but there's nothing he does that isn't already in the army in some capacity. You don't really need tactician if you learn how to manage a traffic jam. You want your free solos to do things your jacks and troops don't. Midwinter has counter spell and magical attacks. Kell provides accurate long range magical fire guaranteed to wound. Madelyn comes in handy if you find yourself in an attrition game and enemy warriors start getting dangerously close to Damiano.
I'll post later about how to manage traffic. Your main weakness is a lack of magic attacks, so it's wise to pair this list with one that has that base covered.

Gotcha! That makes sense.

I see, I tend to get too wrapped up with trying to take everything a unit could use or that it thematically goes with as a module instead of thinking about the bigger picture. So would it be worth building Magnus (1or2) as an Irregulars theme to bring in magical attacks through things like Aiyana and Holt? I have been staring at the Idrian Skirmishers since the models look neat, and was thinking of running them with Magnus1 along with Sam and the Devil Dogs.

It really depends on what you want to do. I'm the wrong guy to give advice about pMags, since I've had very little success with him in mk3. But yes, A+H are the go to guys for magic attacks. eMags is a different story... Probably my favorite caster in game...

What's the plan with the idrians and the devil dogs? Blur and snipe respectively? Could be good...

Irregulars is looking really fun and strong, and I'll soon be experimenting with jack marshall heavy armies.

Anyway, I think you're going about it the right way. Pick up models that look sweet and figure out how to make them work. Theory machine never survives contact with reality. Have fun man

Well, I have always wanted to use the Devil Dogs since the models came out, but have always played Khador. I was thinking of Blur on them, and having them Jack Marshal a Freebooter (probably my favorite looking 'Jack in the game).

I love the way Idrians look over Steel Head Riflemen, and I would rather have more shots with Prey boost versus relying on rerolls with Combined Ranged Attacks. Plan to run Saxon Orrik with them since he looks similar.
