Of all the material that has been released (from the index, each codex, or Forge World, including renegades) what have you found to be the best units of chaos in 8th? Perhaps you've seen them in top ranking tournament lists; maybe you've included them in your own army and they've never let you down; or perhaps there is that one guy in your local community with units that just seems unstoppable. Whatever the case, what have you found to be the best in Chaos?

I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you

Berserkers and Noise Marines. I've used both and they're just so much fun to use. Zerks just butcher whatever they touch while Noise Marines can lay down a withering hail of fire. It's a shame that they will likely not see dedicated builds like Death Guard and Thousand Sons will for the foreseeable future.

Without a doubt at the moment the most OP chaos unit is the malefic lord. Though it will likely get erratad any day for 30pts you get a psycher that casts two powers a turn, good statline including a 4++, and goes super Saiyan when they suffer a perils. Stupidly good.

Magnus and Morty are each great as well and at home in most tournament level lists.

For me it's Zerks and my exalted champion with dual lightning claws. Chaos lords are pretty solid too, I wish they still had 2+ armor though.

The unsung heroes to me are the cultists. They are cheap enough to fill slots for a batallion to get that juicy CP, the only non-Daemon way to bubblewrap, and fit into virtually any army strategy you could build.

That being said, Bezerkers currently dominate CC. Space Wolves and Orkz dont hold a candle to the amount of fist dakka the bezerkers churn out.

Also, agree. why GW does not release a bigger and diverse cultist box? Is maddening.

Generic characters disappearing? Elite units of your army losing options and customizations? No longer finding that motivation to convert?

I'll echo an above poster and say the Malefic Lord is far and away the best Chaos unit. 30 points for a psyker that gets bigger and meaner when he perils? Yes please! That said, I really hope that GW/FW come to their senses and nerf them or increase their cost. 30 pts. is just too damn cheap. Characters like that should not be so easily spammable.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

I know Malefic Lords have already been mentioned, but I think the best units available to Chaos right now are actually R&H artillery. I know the downsides of not being able to buff them and the lack of orders. But the ones with indirect fire have a huge advantage, position them behind terrain and they are immune to incoming shots.

- Earthshaker Battery, costs as much as a basic Berzerker unit. You get D6 Str 9 AP -2 D3 damage shots capable of indirect fire. It's immobile, but can hit anything on the board. 3 of them average 12 shots a turn.

- Heavy Mortar Battery, costs a little less than a basic Noise Marine unit. You get D6 S 6 AP -1 shots that cause d3 damage, again capable of indirect fire. At 48 inches, great for dealing with Scions / Terminators / other Heavy Infantry. 3 of them average 12 shots a turn.

- Heavy Quad Launcher, costs a little more than a basic Noise Marine unit. You get 4D6 S 5 AP 0 shots that cause 1 damage, capable of indirect fire. At 48 inches, great for dealing with massed conscripts / guard. 3 of them average 40 shots a turn.

Roll 2 dice and take the highest one. Makes up for the lack of rerolls.

Berserkers, Noise marines, Daemon prince & Obilerators spring to mind.

A Song of Ice and Fire - House Greyjoy.
AoS - Maggotkin of Nurgle, Ossiarch Bonereapers & Seraphon.
Bloodbowl - Lizardmen.
Horus Heresy - World Eaters.
Marvel Crisis Protocol - Avengers, Brotherhood of Mutants & Cabal.
Middle Earth Strategy Battle game - Rivendell & The Easterlings.
The Ninth Age - Beast Herds & Highborn Elves.
Warhammer 40k  - Tyranids.

My best unit was common marines, they become good on smaller formats. While your opponent tries to focus your more expensive units your marines blast away with surprising effectiveness.

The sorcerer in power armor while extremely cheap proves a reliable mortal wound firebase if wrapped in something.

Obliterators. First turn drop and kill Belisarius in one turn.

My top 3 from the codex are:

Daemon Princes are good against anything and highly customizable with Warlord Traits, Legion Traits, Relics and Equipement.

Khorne Berzerkers - high risk, even higher reward. As renegades, it's not that hard to get them into combat if your opponent cant alpha strike them, but thats a problem every single unit has. If you really want gak to die, use the stratagem for an extra round of chopping and kill it.

Maulerfiends - now that it always has 6 attacks from the tendrils, slightly went down in points and got a stratagem for rerolls it got really reliable.
Your opponent really wants to kill this thing but 12 wounds with a 5+ invul safe and regen for 150 points is reallygood for a distraction.

Malefic lords? Someone educate me, I'm a returning ignorant player. After scouring the GW website and Chaos codex, the closest thing I can find are malefic talons...

They're Forgeworld, and one of the rare exceptions where a Forge WOrld model is both not underpowered, but going so far as to see intense tournament play!

Berserkers, Hellbrutes, and Daemon Princes have all been effective against my troops in the games I played. Hellbrutes need to be carefully husbanded or they get lascannoned though. Rubric marines also seem strong, I think the Thousand Sons codex should be a good one when it comes out. If I was going to run chaos it'd probably be TS.

I don't do Forgeworld, so In Codex we have: Daemon Prince, Jump Pack HQs, cheap Cultists (for CP detachments), Heldrakes, Havocs, and Obliterators.

I dont play Khorne or Slaanesh but Berzerkers and Noise Marines seem useful and flavorful. I'm a Nurgle Player, but other than the Daemon Prince and Pox Walkers nothing really grabs me. My Night Lords army uses Raptors to drop Special Weapons down, but thats just a thematic choice.

Characters: Abaddon seems helpful. I also like Typhus, but my theme for DG is Pox Walkers.

Very point efficient Khorne Berzerker

The fact how all basic free weapons got buff since 7th edition, with additional attack 3 attacks on Str 5 is nasty. Combine with 2x the attacks with Blood for Blood God AND chance for extra attack with Death to the Fall Emperor.

Assuming they charge 1st which most likely they will with Rhnio, we are looking at 6 Attacks per Berzerker at Str 5, which really much chop down any infantry, even elites.

Combine that with typical Chaos Lord reroll on 1 and over-charge Plasma....They are like red wave of death.

Malefic Lords are probably one of the more broken units in the game right now. They will either be nerfed hard or we will start seeing 30+ malefic lords as a common loadout.

Bezerkers are good, but not broken, and probably a bit overrated by people here. Cultists are really good also. Chaos really is in a good spot right now.
