Well I played the Gates of Antares fantasy adaptation by Rick Priestley at the weekend, and shot it on video and popped it on youtube. There is a con going on in the background, I'm sorry about the noise. The next batrep I shoot will be much quieter.

https://youtu.be/IyjI8OEJrkE

Played very nicely, like a smoother fantasy bolt action. Played a reasonable sized game with about 30 odd models per side.

This is a system Rick has been developing in his own time and there is some discussion about whether it is something Warlord could develop, so I've done a youtube poll where I have a good old chat about the game.

Sorry I don’t have time to watch the video now, but is it just BTGOA with fantasy models? Or is it a new system? I like BTGOA

BTGOA with some streamlining. Plays even faster, but with similar outcomes in terms of tactics.

It's a really solid system anyway, this makes it even better for skirmishing.

Not yet. What I played and filmed was a pre-playtest rules set.

Didn't know this was in the works at all. Interesting... Warlord Games does now own the old Wargames Factory skeletons, orcs, and amazons, right? Make a kit of human barbarians, maybe mix in some ancients kits, maybe they could have a start on a fantasy range.

Nice.
I like small scale fantasy games.

Will this have dedicated models or is it just a ruleset?

They also have the samurai from WGF, not sure if the zulus are one of their creations or not.

Got through the gnolls shootng at the dwarfs. couldn't take all the background noise anymore so had to shut it off.

Does seem good though. Think I saw on FB Rick is looking to post up some beta rules in a week or two so people can try it out.

Skirmish squad based game does seem like it can have a good market. I look forward to trying out Fantares

Anyone want to summarize the videos? I can't watch them at the moment. Also, do you know what facebook group Rick was posting in about this? I'd like to keep up with it and see how it develops.

You're going to have to try and soldier through them yourself, sadly.

There's WAAAAAY too much background noise/camera pointing at the wrong thing going on here.

Still, kudos for the attempt, and for the news that this was even a thing!

I am interested to see the rules. A more streamlined BTGoA is of interest to me.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

I have never played BTGoA, but to my mind, the same fundamental game engine made to represent sci-fi conflicts is either poorly suited to represent fantasy skirmishes or poorly suited to represent sci-fi conflicts.

IIRC they also has historical Zulus (which were dire), Samurai, realistic vikings (no horn heads), persians, and some generic ancients (tunic, shield and spear). They ranged from bad to mediocre and were a bit smaller than the usual 28-32mm fantasy stuff.

So yeah something might be possible.

Worked out okay for Games Workshop. You know, last time Rick did it.

Zing!

I like the GoA rules, but the setting doesn't do much for me. A fantasy version could be cool.

That's the one thing that's been a real let-down with GoA, boring factions in a boring world with no incentive to fight eachother.

I'd definitely buy at least a rulebook for a fantasy version of the game though.

Like WFB/40k?

Like the way you dismissed it having never played either games variant. You can leave now.

Warlord makes their own Zulus and Brits w/ pith helmets, which are great. The main acquisition was the modern and zombie stuff, retooled, the WSS stuff, retooled, and the samurai stuff. They do still have some things like the orcs (which are great, and are great to use as Mordor Uruk-Hai in SBG) and random things that they sell by the sprue. TBH I don't see them using them at all. GoA has a fair number of plastic kits now and they release at least 1 new plastic kit for BA per month (gosh maybe 2 now per month or more, thinking about the last six months of releases), so if they DID go ahead with this as a product line, I would bet dollars to donuts they'd make new plastics.
