Hello Chaps/ Ladies,

Having stayed at the Hilton in Canary Warf this weekend I have to say it had an absolutely cracking breakfast!

Not only were the stalwarts of bacon, sausages, hash browns etc. excellently done but the spread included mountains of black pudding, haggis, custom omelettes and the like.
The only things I might have wanted which were not there were poached eggs and laverbread (Strange I know, but my time in Wales gave me a taste for the stuff).

My companion and I were debating whether this was the best hotel breakfast we had experienced (The Kingsbury in Colombo being the other contender, with it's insane variety including oysters and champagne).

So what is the best hotel breakfast you have experienced and what made it so good?

The best breakfast buffet I ever had was in Hotel Miracosta at Tokyo DisneySea theme park. The buffet bar was larger than most hotels, and featured a very full selection of Japanese, Continental and American breakfast food.

Sadly no black pudding, baked beans or laver bread, though.

Me? Pretty much any. Though the hotel I stay in when I visit Nottingham does have an all you can eat brekkie. Ideal when you've been drinking the night away in The Sal!

One of the best I have had was at a wedding venue in Somerset.
We had booked accommodation there and in the fridge were individual packed breakfasts of great quality locally sourced fresh produce.
Sure you had to cook them yourself but I'm not a bad cook so I was able to get everything just so.

I would say the best I've ever had would have to be at the Peninsula hotels. They always have an amazing spread.

Do cruises count? I had a pretty awesome breakfast every day on the Alaskan cruise I did this past June. It was on the Celebrity Solstice.

A few years ago at GenCon I stayed at the Fairfield Inn & Suites right by the convention center, they had a free breakfast every day with eggs and stuff. It was decent, but when I walked past their “kitchen” I saw that was just a big room with wall to wall microwaves, there were like 10 of em. I don’t even think there was a normal oven or stove in there at all. You would think if they’re gonna jack up room prices to $350 a night they would be able to afford a real kitchen.

Wow small world! That is a nice bit of London, although I don't envy you commuting by tube everyday.
I always feel like a bit of a mommet in Carnary Warf with all you city slickers dressed up in sharp suits :-p

Haha, that is a pretty liberal interpretation of kitchen! I wonder how you get bacon to crisp up in a microwave...
To be fair though if you hadn't seen all the microwaves you probably would have been quite happy with the food.

Had a really good one a couple of weeks ago in Guadeloupe, think the hotel was called La Creole.
Being French it had all the staples of a continental breakfast, but it had plenty of carribbean trimmings added on. All the juices freshly pulped before you was magnificent.

The Apex in Glasgow does a decent breakfast as well. Although the coffee is terrible (pretty normal in the UK I find), the food's pretty good.

Walking shikoku pilgrimage this year gave me whole tons of good breakfessts though not sure do those count. They weren't hotels per se but "minshuku" which is basically paid lodging often on hosts home. Either way tasty and healthy(which is helpful when you are walking 25-30km a day)

I've found Hilton breakfast buffets pretty good, but German hotel buffets are a league of their own.

But then I tend to just want to quickly fill up on stodge and get out to whatever I'm meant to be doing. As long as there's sausage, egg and beans then I'm good.

Must places in the highlands and islands are solid. I've stayed in a lot of them and pretty much never been disappointed. Usually in there on orchestral tours where were only in the place from midnight to 8am so it's only really the breakfasts you remember. The average highland b&b wipes the floor with the 5* places I've been in both in the UK and in Dubai and Qatar (not been in loads of examples, but a few!). No idea why it's the case. Probably consistent Stornaway black pudding and enthusiasm for any-way-you-like-them eggs.

German hotel buffets are a league of their own.

Really?! I've got nothing but scorn for every European breakfast I have ever had, but maybe I was staying in the wrong places.

It's like they don't understand that a ham and cheese sandwich isn't a breakfast...and every attempt they make at a full English is diabolical! :-p

Flipside is small sizes. That is definite negative. They are lot smaller than me so it suits them but leaves me feeling like I could stuff more. Though then again with the long walk ahead better not to be totally stuffed probably least rather than walking I roll ahead.

Oh and rice you can get seconds at will.

Oh and there was one thing common around that section of Japan that I skipped after first attempt. Raw egg+soy sauce+rice mixed in. Yikes. Taste was actually good but the texture in mouth made me feel like puking.

I believe the best hotel breakfast I've ever had was at the Radisson Hotel in Trondheim. In addition to the usual buffet stuff, they had an omelet station, where a cook would make you an omelet while you waited.

Basically rice, vegetables, fish form the main core though out of 17 or so meals I had not one was identical(same went for dinners).

Sounds yummy, I love fish! (apart from herring, screw herring)

We are total opposites in the way we categorise things though. When I was living in Ceylon I used to complain about every meal being rice and curry, but in reality there was a good deal of variety within that category.
So if I lived in Japan I'm certain I would complain about every meal being fish and rice!

Haha certainly if you don't like rice&fish Japan is not country you want to be or at least stay in minshuku/ryokan(ryokan is basically more formal type of lodging with better quality but pricier. Minshuku is often like retired people running it as a side project, in Shikoku often in support of pilgrims as main motivator. Ryokan's are more like professionals) or request no food, only bed and bring your own food. For dinner there's non-rice options like udon/ramen soups but those are more for lunch you go to restaurant. Not really available for breakfast except in bigger places if you specifically go for restaurant(problem being in Japan restaurants, especially on more rural areas that basically covers entire Shikoku barring the 4 big cities, have habit of opening up late(11am you can see "preparing to open" signs...).

So yeah if rice&fish is not your thing for breakfast Japan can be rough Many western pilgrim after walking for month or so has noted being ready to kill(figuratively speaking) for a change of pace

Business hotels also can have more variety for breakfast and outside walking shikoku pilgrimage generally around. For me I prefer traditional japanese meals though so minshuku/ryokan it is. More social than business hotel(their name for the hotels as we are familiar with the term) as well which is a bonus if you like talking.

Maybe the problem is looking for a full English, in Germany

I was in a pretty nice hotel in Bavaria a couple of months ago, and there were sections for cereal, fruit, yogurt, cold meats, cold cheeses, and then the usual hot stuff (bacon, sausages, scrambled egg, beans), and the usual juice, tea/coffee, toast and bread. Tonnes of choice and most of it pretty nice. Very German themed though.

My wife and I still dream about and try to find a place that serves the awesome tiny waffles we would get at the Hale Koa in Hawaii.
