Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Hello and welcome to Dakka and the hobby!

40k can certainly seem overwhelming, I know it did to me. I recommend you check out what the miniatures look like first, decide which factions you would enjoy painting and collecting based on that, then choose one of those. Games Workshop's own site is a good resource for this, you can look at the currently available models for each army there. You can ask about playstyles and whether they're beginner-friendly armies on Dakka or elsewhere before you make your choice.

Then choose what to get. A Start Collecting box is a good first purchase in most cases, along with some necessary hobby tools if you don't have them already. A hobby knife, side cutters, plastic cement, (super glue for metal and resin), primer, brushes and paints are the essentials.

Download the basic rules for free at https://www.games-workshop.com/en-SE/Warhammer-40000-Rules. The rules for your specific army can be found either in a codex or an index, depending on your choice. If your army has a codex, don't bother with the index. I recommend getting Battlescribe for list building, it's free to download and makes building your list much smoother and easier.

Don't get too many models at once. Buy a few, build, paint, decide whether you want more. Ask online for tips. Play small games at first, so you get a feeling for the game.

Hi and welcome! As for where to start, have you been in to a games store and played an introductory game? Give it a go before you spend any money.

Are you going to be playing with a friend who's also new to the game? There are worse things you could do than split the starter box set between you.

If you're looking at joining a club or playing people in-store, then I'd suggest a copy of the rulebook and the codex for whatever faction takes your fancy for starters.

Most factions now have a 'start collecting' box that offer a reasonable discount compared to buying the contents individually, and are funnily enough a good place to start...

On the painting side of things, I can highly recommend the GW tutorials starring Duncan. Also have a look at the new Warhammer Paint app.

If you're looking where to start I can suggest two things.

1) Find your local store and see when their "Warhammer night" is. If it's a Games Workshop store, ask when do most 40k players show up. Watch some games, ask some questions. You might make a couple of friends!

2) If that goes well, consider buying the Dark Imperium set for a good deal on the rules and everything that you need to play. Additionally, you get about 500 points of two different armies that you can experiment with a friend and decide who you would want to play as. Even better say you don't like the Primaris Marines, you can sell them on eBay for about $50.

Hope that helps, and welcome to dakka!

Good luck! For me it was always about what looked like it would be fun to paint, while still being enjoyable from the fluff/story...
