Had my LGS owner start sweet talking me into getting into runewars two days ago. It's doing kind of nicely there but I do wonder, it's it the norm or just an exception nowadays? Considering the track record of this franchise (that is, how things went with battlelore) I'd like to ask

I have seen no one in my area play and the only open boxes were the free ones given away at Adepticon. Avoid and buy in 40k.

Have not even seen it at the FLGS I frequent.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

depends on whats popular in your area, we have some folks playing it at a couple flgs. If you got folks playing then by all means, jump right in.

Had some interest after a demo game at the FLGS before a big X-Wing tournament. Seemed to be lots of people quite impressed and cautiously optimistic. Now it's been out for a little while: nothing. I don't think it really grabbed people's imaginations much here. The Runewars background isn't well-known, even among people that have played the various FFG games set in the same world, and the lack of multiple factions at launch seems to have killed it.

It's now in the chicken and egg situation of so many wargames where not enough people play it so people don't want to start playing it but then there aren't enough people who play it so...

It'll be interesting to see if Legion's Star Wars license can save it from a similar fate.

I've seen nothing in the stores in my area.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

A lot of people in my area bought into it, played a number of games and then shelved it... waiting on the Wave 2 releases. Several months into this wait, the Armada season started back up and Runewars stayed on the shelf when Wave 2 hit. We all bought those releases with the intention of playing later. Then Star Wars Legion was announced. I think Runewars is going to stay on the shelf.

I think that part of the issue is that while Runewars is a re-imagined Warhammer Fantasy with FFG rules, Legion is a re-imagined Warhammer 40k with FFG rules AND Star Wars models. Legion is going to beat out Runewars for anyone who likes 40k (a lot of people in this niche industry) but doesn't think the 40k rules are very good.

Could also just be sheer bad timing.

When that hype train was just pulling in, the 8th Ed Hype Train was already under steam.

Whether or not you personally rate 8th Ed, there’s no denying that 40k is a gaming juggernaught. Not only is it widely played, but there’s a decent number of former players that are easier to tempt in to a revamped system than a brand new one.

I’m not particularly up on either game (I’ve played a total of 1 game since launch. See my well documented lack of gaming time), so I can only offer speculation.

Saw some of it(or all of it, didn't look too closely)on the 50% off table at my local stores Yard Sale/Trade type event(Titan Games & Hobbies in Maryland) last month. Right next to WHFB stuff that hasn’t been reboxed into the new white AoS boxes, and a couple Shadows over Hammerhal sets(that I should’ve pulled the trigger on) and some other ttg brands that I had no interest in.

After that event, it was moved back to its tiny section of the store. Not sure if its still discounted. The other products that were on that table were moved to a 30% off bin, so I assume its probably still discounted as well.

I can’t speak to the quality of the game, as I have 0 interest in it, but as a retailer(in an unrelated industry) if I’m selling a product that was released within the year at 50% off, it either has a phenomenal retail markup or it was DOA and I’m cutting my losses to clear space for product that moves.

For a short time, I followed this games release and its reception on the few online forums that I frequent and it seems to get a thumbs up in terms of its rules quality, but it seems to have just not taken off due to apprehension or plain old disinterest. Something about FFG has a track record of unexpectedly ghosting on some of their games?

I think if a game is going to enter the rank and flank void left by WHFB, its got to be on point to compete with KoW which has momentum, and to a lesser extent T9A (which is arguably floundering before its 2.0 release) and the other soon to be released R+F strategy TTGs. Rules, lore, model quality and brand support have got to be on a level that demands interest and gives people confidence that its something worth buying into. I think Runewars only checked the first of the 4.

One of the few games I've actually enjoyed as a tournament game (I'm running a human army with no heros and was actually doing well).

Our area, unfortunately is now having difficulty getting four people together to do official tournaments. At this point it hasn't seem to caught on (local 40K has over 20 players, at least 12 in X-Wing tourney scene, and a AoS 12-player league just wrapped up), but it is still a young game - with barely 3 armies available. In comparison, there is no WarmaHordes or Armada being played in the store, so it at least has some life.

It never ends well

Pretty sure my FLGS sold one copy and I saw one match played in store.

I put this in the same category as Arcane Legions, and probably a bit worse at trying to do the same thing. And that one was dead within the year too.

Runewars sold alright at the local FLGS when it was brand new, but I haven't seen anyone buy it, play it, talk about it or acknowledge it in any way since. The FLGS is slow to put boardgames on clearance--they still have Sedition Wars for $80--so no indication there.

Depends on the area.

We have a pretty solid core group of players here (Able to get 4-5 at a regular game night, can get a pick up game nearly any day of the week on social media), some orbiting on the fringes, and a fairly regular stream of interested parties looking for demos.

It's a great game. A lot of people are turned off by the generic fantasy presentation, but the mechanics sell themselves.

Mechanically speaking, it's one of the better and more fun competitive miniature games on the market right now, IMO.

The upcoming release of the fourth faction is exciting, and likely to spur a bit more interest from the "I'm waiting to see" crowd, as well as expanding the competition a bit wider.

If you like the game and models there's nothing stopping you from getting a 2 player starter set, painting it up, and offering demos to fellow gamers at your LGS. You'd be surprised at how effective this can be to sparking interest.
