You can get rid of gloss with a matte varnish. I use Army-Painter Anti-Shine varnish.
I generally use a satin varnish since it holds together better than matte varnish, but follow that with anti-shine. Gets rid of all the shineiness.
Although, if you use it, don't use too many layers. just use enough to get rid of the shine. (2-3 passes) Too many layers and you'll get somewhat of a dusty-effect that looks bad.
