Ridin' on a Snotling Pump Wagon

How do?

Seems I’m on a nostalgia kick tonight, as I’ve not only kicked off a thread about 2nd Ed 40k, but also, and I’m not entirely sure why, went Googling the ‘Robocop Future Police’ toy line.

I had a few in my youth. Robocop of course, couple of his Rozzer mates, and a single solitary goon. Man those toys were fun. Granted it was to be many years until I got see the film (I was 11, it was an 18. If only Padme and Anakin has show similar discretion), but it still left a cultural mark.

Looking at the toys, memories come flooding back, and I’m kind of tempted to start collecting them once I’ve finished my current restoration project.

But looking at the images, we see the idiocy that passed us by in our kids.

Good example? The Skull Cycle. A motorbike toy for Robocop’s baddies. Nothing insane about that. Except.....

WITH SURPRISE CRUISE MISSILE!!!!

Now I don’t know if Cruise Missiles are still a thing, but even so. A ‘surprise’ cruise missile. A cruise missile. On a motorbike. A two wheeled, ultimately flimsy convergence. With a cruise missile.

That’s....that’s not a ‘surprise’....that’s a ‘WHAT THE BLOODY HELL!’ weapon. In the world of surprises, that’s up there with walking down the road to get some bread, when Ultimate Warrior emerges from one’s nipsy to give you a wedge surprise. That’s discovering a planet made entirely out candy floss surprise!

But hey, that was the 80’s for you, it was pretty mental all round.

And the toy range for Robocop Ultra Police remains pretty rad to this day (their backs were cap guns. cap guns. In a figure.

But what other toy lunacy do you recall (note to Frazzled...two sticks are not a toy. Get with the now, dude)

Metal Lawn Darts.

These are 1/2 pound darts with a sharp point that are weighted so that they land pointing end down.

They have a handle on one in that you toss them with. You set up a circle in the ground and throw it at it.

You know who isn't coordinated? Drunk people and kids. Guess who have a tendency to either throw these wildly off target or straight up in the air?

Legendary Master of the Chapter

SoCal

Reminds me of the pogo ball, which disappeared really quickly. It's like a pogo stick without a handle, but guaranteed to launch your face into concrete.

Also, remember Skip It? The very best thing of all: there's a counter on the ball.

Captain Power was pretty awesome, too. The toys allowed children at home to interact with the post-apocalyptic Terminator hellscape on their TVs.

They still sell wood burning kits that allow kids to draw pictures /designs and write words into pieces of wood.

The device gets up to 1/2 the temperature of the sun (hyperbole intended) and has a 2' power cord so that you are never too far from flammable drapes and curtains!
