So I bought the getting started with 40k magazine so my wife could get an easy idea of what it's all about.

My nephew was around and started flicking through it. He got to the page with a showcase of some chaos space marines and asked "Are these the baddies?"

I took a deep breath, gritted my teeth and felt myself lie to him. "Yes. Those are the bad guys."

I know I should have told him the truth... Told him about the false emperor.

What would you have done?

Well, technically you didn't lie. Chaos Marines are one of the many baddies in 40K. So are regular Space Marines & all Imperials, Orks, Necrons, Nids, Tau and all other short sighted usurpers to the galaxy.

Only the Aeldari race knows what's best for the galaxy. Only their will is true and "good".

You should sit him down and explain that when you disagree with someone it's easy to say "they are the bad guys". In reality there are no good guys or bad guys, just people with different points of view. Except for pinko Tau. Pinko Tau are always wrong and always the bad guys.

Lie to them.

If you are comfortable with the lies about Sandy Claws and the tooth thief who comes in the night, then what's another lie about a made up creature?

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

False God I'd agree with, it's hard to call him a "False Emperor" when he actually made an Empire.
Just as amusing is the battlecry "Death to the False Emperor"
...he's a corpse...

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

My nephew (3) called my Salamanders "bad guys". so i sat him down with the rulebook and we looked through it.

He saw Chaos Space Marines and said "these are bad guys",
I looked upon him with pride and thought this ones not a heretic.

You should have definitely have told him they were the good guys!

I remember play Sid Meier's Gettysburg as a young lad and asked my Granddad "Which ones are the goodies Granddad?"

Having recently returned from a business trip in North Carolina, he of course said "Why the Confederacy, my boy".

And so began a love affair with the Southern USA which I have maintained off and on for my entire life!

Since

History is written by the Victors
and
Chaos hasn't won

Then

Chaos/Tyranids/Eldar/Necrons/Etc are the bad guys

Some people find the idea that other people can be happy offensive, and will prefer causing harm to self improvement.

Well I guess it's just a lie of omission since the great 4 armed emperor is going to call the sky children to bring us all to ascension.

Might have been a good time to teach him the greatest lesson in life. They are no good guys in war.

If we fail to anticipate the unforeseen or expect the unexpected in a universe of infinite possibilities, we may find ourselves at the mercy of anyone or anything that cannot be programmed, categorized or easily referenced.

One of the best things about the 40k setting is that there are no good guys.
It still draws me in as a much more nuanced alternative the Hollywood-based "good looking good guys kill ugly bad guys' narratives that abound in popular culture. Rarely is anything as clear-cut as that, and I think 40k conveys that message well.

40k starts with the question, “Who is worse, Satan or the Nazis?” And goes from there. It’s a big colorful ball pit full of horrible people screaming and shooting each other.

This is why those moments of bravery and sacrifice are such a big deal. These are not good people, not a single one of them. But the extreme adversity makes even fascist genetically altered brainwashed superhumans jump on a grenade for their brothers for no other reason than the bonds of war. Which are pretty much the only bonds that can exist in such a terrible place.

It’s all a matter of perspective - if you think you’re a good guy then you are and someone else thinks you’re a bad guy then you are.

Bow down to Guilliman for he is our new God Emperor!

Martel - "Custodes are terrible in 8th. Good luck with them. They take all the problems of marines and multiply them."

"Lol, classic martel. 'I know it was strong enough to podium in the biggest tournament in the world but I refuse to acknowledge space marines are good because I can't win with them and it can't possibly be ME'."

Well, it is better to give your kid a soft morale teaching that good guys are good and bad guys are bad.

He will soon enugh discover that life is a sin no matter what you do, or belive in.

Nothing wrong with this, "yeah they're the bad guys" is a pretty fair simplification for an 8 year old.
