I've been eyeing KoW for a while now (several years in fact) but I only recently discovered there's a small community here. I have a copy of the rulebook that was given to me and out of the factions, I'm kinda really attracted to Abyssal Dwarfs. How are they power-wise if I want to focus mainly on the dwarf part (this also includes things like Halfbreeds and Golems)?

Also I had a question, since as I understand it the latest edition removed standard/musician type units. Since, as far as I can tell from reading the Abyssal Dwarf army list, Blacksouls and Immortal Guard are fundamentally the same (Immortal Guard are just better due to being more elite) and there are no Blacksoul models anymore, would it be possible to use the same models but paint the Immortal Guard different or give them a banner to differentiate them from Blacksouls? For instance, if the "Immortal Guard" had bronze helmets and a banner, and the "Blacksouls" had silver helmets and no banner, would that be enough on the table to differentiate the two?

Yes, that would fine. Alternately, there are these Fallen Dwarves from Anvil Industries. Originally I was thinking of using them for Blacksouls. However, I've started reducing the dwarf part of my Abyssal Dwarf army. The half-breeds and golems (both Lesser and Greater) have been fine, but the Blacksouls were disappointing. A horde of them is too slow and unmanueverable. Bringing a Lesser Obsidian Golem horde still gets the same unlocks for army building and one can use Surge tricks to manuever them. Gargolyes are also good chaff and for threatening flanks and rear of units who have engaged your line.

If you can, proxy the units you want to use and see how they perform. If you like them, then you can buy them.

And for KoW army building: http://kow2.easyarmy.com/

Good gaming!

I have a very young player than is starting her second army - the first is Forces of Nature, but she is painting up her dad's ancient plastic Chaos Dwarfs as her Abyssal Dwarf army.

The figures are much, much older than the nine year old player.

As far as I can make out, the Abyssal Dwarfs are a nasty, nasty bunch to play against - lots of close range damage.

The reason I bought rules and became a real wargamer was because I wanted a properly thought out structure to govern the action instead of just making things up as I went along.

Abyssal dwarves lacks medium range shooting (no bows, crossbows, rifles or equivalent) but they have a lots of short range shooting (decimators, dragon fire weapon teams) and also some of the best indirect war engines in the game (the rockets are reliable due to having several attacks, while the mortars are very random but devastating when they hit, especially the heavy mortar)

The AD also have nice elements if you want to play with mobility :
- cheap flying chaff with the garoyles
- the halfbreeds are a very nice heavy cavalry, they have only average defense comared to knights, but they regenerate and they are less deependant on the initial charge thanks to having CS(1) and TC(1) instead of the usual TC(2), so they are much better in prolonged fights
- Grotesques are a slower but tougher version of the halfbreed
- the halfreed champion if among the best fighting hero in the game, he is fast, mobile, tough, regenerate and hit very hard (plus he inspires), he is among the few fighting hero that can fight a vampire one on one and not feel outclassed.
- the grotesque champion is less powerful but also cheaper, he is more like a medium/small monster that you can use to hold objective or get flank/rear charges (as he is not individual)
- AD heroes have large flying mount options
- and the slave orcs can provide a cheaper option with the slave gore riders if needed

In short, AD are a very varied army with lots of option for all phases of the game

Where is the love/hate for obsidian golems? They seem to dominate AD lists.

The golems are simply nice and tough, with def 6+ they can make for a very tough to crack anvil, and they also have some CS so their damage potential is decent.

In short, it's not rare to see AD armies that simply don't take many pure dwarves (often just a few heroes to lead the army) and use a core of golems with halfbreeds, grotesques and gargoyles on the flanks, with some war engines behind them.

That said, both black souls and immortals are perfectluy decent infantry and can be used as a cheaper alternative to hold the center or to buff your numbers
