I dabbled with friends way back around 1994 in some DnD - dont ask me to remember the ruleset or books but we had some fun.
Later around 2008 we tried out 2nd ed WHFRP.
I've also read the 40k Dark Heresy and Black Crusade rulesets (which are very like WFFP imo in terms of mechanics etc.).

Basically Im looking for advice and ideas on RPGs that would suit a group more into the actual RPG element of exploration/discovery/relatively simple mechanics (but with some good combat fights too).
Having played and read wfrp and the 40k ones they seem much too heavy and dependent on charts, tonnes of skills/talents/abilities and die rolling (or maybe we just did it wrong!).

I'd be playing the GM by the way.
Thanks!

If you want to play a fantasy adventure that is long on narrative and short on book keeping you would be hard pressed to do better than Basic D&D or its variants.

Grab a copy of the Rules Cyclopedia:

Retroclones are also really good for this. I prefer White Box, a slightly modified version of the original D&D set:

I like FUDGE for stuff that is longer on story and less about crunch.

I have also heard good things about the FATE system.

I never played FUDGE but FATE of course uses FUDGE dice. My impression of FATE is that it is designed to encourage and support generating narrative, such as the mechanic of story points traded back and forth between the GM and players (a big fad in the last decade of design) - but I am pretty skeptical of such mechanics. I think what's needed to generate engaging stories is not some mechanical incentive but rather an actual relationship between GM and players where the GM is open to what they players are interested in pursuing, rather than being focused on "guiding" them down certain pre-arranged paths. The reason I like Basic D&D so much is because the rules tend to very easily "get out of the way" of these more important things, what I consider to be the play itself (as opposed to "the rules" or "the system").

Consider one of the 'retro-clones' updated versions of old editions of D&D. Hmm, in 1994 you probably played BECMI D&D or AD&D 2nd ed. Look into Labyrinth Lord ( Which is based on a version of D&D known as B/X) or Dark Dungeons( BECMI based) or go even further back and get Swords & Wizardry (Original D&D based)

For AD&D 1E there is something called OSRIC.

These are all free PDFs. there are more too...

Here is a useful place to find all the links. http://taxidermicowlbear.weebly.com/dd-retroclones.html

You can try a cut down version of the current D&D 5E. Here http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/basicrules and character sheets http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/character_sheets

I would also agree that it is hard to go wrong with Basic D&D.

Savage Worlds is a generic system that is fairly simple There are not a lot of tables to look up and you can do pretty much any genre. The main book will cost you $10 for a printed copy.

For a post apocalyptic spin, I would recommend Mutant Year Zero. The system is simple, but I feel elegant. It has a strong narrative and allows for community/character building.

Dungeon World is a nice rules light system that makes use of the players to help forge the narrative and helps the players feel special as their character is the only one of their class in the world.

Numenera is a science fantasy game, but has a generic set of rules also available under the Cypher System. It is a system where NPCs are described with very few stats. The players make all the rolls allowing the GM to focus on what happens based upon the rolls.

Just a few. If you are looking for a specific genre, then please give more details. I might have more suggestions depending on additional details.

Might be worth taking a look at this: https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/genesys/

Always likes the storytelling aspect of the dice from WHFRP and Star Wars.
