How do?

So this is actually my third or fourth crack at starting a topic about this. The others spiralled off into my usual waffery, so I dropped them.

What I want to impress is the role Necromunda can play in the wider 40k setting.

See, Warhammer 40,000is about the grand stage - galaxy shaking events, and the snuffing out of entire systems and sub sectors. And that’s great and all.

But ever since the get go, we’ve been spoiled with ridiculous minutiae about the Imperium Of Man, and now the vast majority of its citizens spend their frankly pitiful lives. Whlist that attention to detail has indeed always been, its fallen by the way side somewhat.

Necromunda though promises to scratch that particular itch, and in a way 40k simply can’t really do. With a much smaller stage, they can introduce new stuff without having to conjur up a whole background for them. That’s creatively liberating.

For instance, a new race for Warhammer 40,000 has to fit onto the galactic stage somewhere, yet not feel daft or contrived as to why we’ve not really heard of them before (Nids, Tau, Necrons and Dark Eldar all managed this, so their tricks can’t be easily repeated).

But a new race introduced via Necromunda can very easily be a ‘bit part’. Simply put, their species doesn’t need to be a galactic mover and shaker. They could be a Xenos race tolerated within the Imperium (think Jokaero),or unwelcome guests making the most of the decrepitude of the Underhive to hide out.

It’s also a canvas where we’re already seeing very, very old concepts brought back. Gor Half-horn is the first character released, and he’s an update of a Rogue Trader mini, and a concept long since popped on the shelf. One only needs to glance at Stuff of Legends to see how rich that particular vein is (Rogue Trader was a riot of imagination and eventually abandoned concepts).

Regardless, Necromunda is a new and much needed lens into the 40k galaxy. It can show us the ridiculous minutiae it’s full blown cousin simply can’t. And who knows, maybe it will serve as a test bed of sorts for new ideas and concepts which, one day, might appear in regular 40k?
