The tyranid codex point cost section says "does not include weapons" whereas other codices/indices say "weapons or wargear". The chitin thorns biomorph, which isn't a weapon, comes stock on Thornbacks. My question is if the price of a Thornback includes the chitin thorns? Based on other codices I'd say no, but since the tyranid codex ommits the wargear part it makes me believe it's intentional.

You're missing the top of the page "Simply add together the points values of all your models, as well as the weapons and biomorphs they are equipped
with, to determine your army’s total points value."

You pay for the biomorphs.

I did indeed miss that part. I do still find it peculiar that the Tyranid codex is the only entry so far where it specifically only says weapons though, and not weapons and wargear. This would only affect the Thornback since it's the only unit, to my knowledge, that comes stock with a non-weapon biomorph upgrade. But you're correct. I guess the Thornback and Screamer-killer will continue to be overshadowed by regular Carnifexes.

They're only pre-packed versions of Carnifexes with set loadouts after all. Shouldn't expect price differences.

Because "wargear" isn't a tyrannidy word I guess.

Also don't Thornbacks and Screamer-killers get some advantages over normal carnifexes? I thought SK's got a better bioplasma

SKs get better bioplasma and +1 to all morale rolls for enemies within 8". Problem is the plasma being D6 shots on a model with BS4+, and since the SK is a melee monster you're most likely advancing each turn meaning you're hitting on 5s with D6 shots. It also costs 23 points more than a regular Carnifex. The Thornback ignores cover against infantry, but in return has extremely limited wargear options and is 3 points more expensive over a regular Carnifex.

The +1 to hit when the SK charges means it will make tasty tasty mincemeat out of units, regardless of the biosplasna hitting. And at no chance of dying 6 shots and AP-4 it's a nice spray-and-pray bonus!

Yeah, that's way better than the +1 to Hit a Carnifex gets on a charge.
