Hi.

I'm considering maybe trying out the White Scars in Warhammer. The idea of the fast biker type army appeals to me somewhat, but I'm very curious about how well White Scars performs. I know that the game is hard to get into due to expense, so I don't want to spend money on miniatures that are totally outclassed. I don't care very much if I win or lose as long as the game is fun, but I want it to be at least a real game.. and not get steamrolled because of my faction choice.

So what is good about the White Scars? I guess they can just move slightly further than other marines and that's it? Is that weak compared to the other marine factions?

If I were going to start playing, what kind of models should I be looking for? My budget isn't huge, so I can't get the $150 models from the games workshop website.

Is there a better choice for the marines other than White Scars?

I can't comment on their performance, since I do not play marines. My only advice is following some painting tutorials on youtube on how to paint White Scars (and painting white in general). It is not an easy colour but it may be done wonderfully with a little care. I think that the models you choose to play with should be interesting to paint and to collect, even before their in game rules. The reason for that is because rules change quickly and the meta with them, as long as you like your army's background and aesthetics, you'll be fine.

The worst thing you can do is start Warhammer choosing an army only based on their current performance in game.

I agree with the above post. I have played white scars since 3rd edition when their rules were in white dwarf. Their effectiveness varied a lot with each edition change. I haven’t played them in 8th so I can’t really comment on their current effectiveness but I know that they are very mobile and able to withdraw from melee and charge back in the same turn. So if you like the look of them and like the idea of a highly mobile hit-and-run army, the white scars are for you. Just don’t get any dreadnoughts for them, they don’t like them (lore wise).

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

I know you said White Scars but since you're on a budget, Ravenwing might also be an attractive option. You can pick up the basic bikes pretty easy on EBay. They have way cooler landspeeder options and the Black Knights are really good. Just my 2 cents.
