Hey, I have been into Warhammer 40k for a while, but for the most part I have only watched or read battle reports. I found out that there is a game shop that holds tournaments and games near me, and I think I want to get started playing. I know that they usually play with 2000 point armies, so my goal is to build one.

I would really like to play an army that floods the board with cheap miniatures that die off relatively fast, so I am thinking about building a 2000 point Ork army. I looked at some of the things to buy, and the Battle for Vedros boxes seemed like the most affordable for me just starting out. I have about 250 dollars that I can spend on Warhammer 40k right now, so I want to build something functional that can transition into something better later on. I just really want my hands on some miniatures right now, even if it isn't optimal.

So, my question is: what should I be looking at getting next to work towards that 2000 point army? What should I be looking at with my HQ? How many trukks might I need? That kind of stuff.

Edit: I have the Ork codex and the most recent rulebook.

Ork codex or index with the ork army? The latest ork codex is from 7th edition which does not translate to 8th.

Having said all that I am not an ork player so I can't help you there, but there is an ork battle box coming out soon from gw that looks interesting. Also there are some ork sets sold by Revelle that don't look bad, they look like starter sets with the mono pose models but if your starting out that's not a bad thing.

Gl with entering the hobby, I don't suggest tourneys until you understand the game unless you do it for the experience. But even then it's not a good place to start, most tourney players expect you to know your army pretty well and won't take any mercy, but go in and get to know the players there in the store. Talk to them and become friends with the owner, most owners can stear you towards the good players / people and won't want to throw you to the wolves, they want you to come back and buy more not get discouraged and never come back.

GW will be releasing some battle forces soon, including one for orks that looks interesting, but I don't think it would be the best for a flood of boyz. It does include some very nice models, though.
For a flood of boyz I would go and look on ebay to get boyz for cheaper prices.

For swarms, you'll be paying hand over fist for models. 5 cultists in my area is about 12 dollars, and a box of CSM is 10 for 40. Cultists are 4 points, CSM are 13. You do the math.

Go online on Ebay, Kajiji, what have you to find Orcs. Avoid buying boxes if you only have 250.

US pricing is far more reasonable than Canadian. OP looks to be an American.

Horde armies look awesome but I'd recommend not going overboard and buying up 2k points of boys/gaunts/guardsmen as the resulting mass of grey plastic is extremely demotivating when it comes time to paint them all. Buy it in manageable chunks.
