so i enjoy fiddling with excel and someone mentioned this site to me so i was wondering if it is worth the effort of joining and what the possible value in it could be.
do any of you guys do freelance work on it and is it worth what looks like a bunch of hassle?

Don't know about excel-related jobs there, but a very large chunk of my monthly income comes from Upwork and similiar platforms - I'm in a graphic design field.

How those work is simple - they provide secure/guaranteed payment platform, so there is waaay less trouble with delayed payments. But you must work your way up from the very bottom of "unrated" freelancer and gain some recognition/rating. So there is quite an involvement needed to gain stable income from it.

Don't take more than you can chew, meet deadlines, be thorough and you should be good. Having an institional middle-man that can enforce payment on you or otherwise discipline you does indeed filter out douchebag clients quite well. They do still happen from time to time, but not as often as in an "open market" jobs.
