I was reminiscing with my brother the other day about how we used to create 'challenge' maps for one another using the Warcraft 2 map editor and I realised what a lot of fun it is creating maps and levels in games.
I've spent a lot of time in editors like that in Broodwar, Halo 3, Timesplitters 2, American Conquest, Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3 and many more battling fiddly interfaces and limited options to create my vision for the ultimate map!
The Dakka faithful must be a pretty creative bunch considering it is a fundamental part of Warhammer, does anyone else do this? What was your Magnum Opus?

Operation Flashpoint. An incredibly detailed map editor enabling maps, models, macros, triggers, reactions and basically anything else your heart could conceive.
Im a tech eejit and even managed to recreate the end battle from Platoon using it.....

I think the pinnacle of level design from me was Halo: Reach. Easily the best forge mode and the forge world map was just grand. The amount of creativity from that game was overwhelming. Race maps were always my favourite, nothing like a well designed one too. Only Halo forge could get away with something so unrelated to the actual game and still be really funny to mess around with.

I've heard so many stories about Operation Flashpoint but never got round to playing it, pretty cool that it came with a comprehensive map editor although I think making them too detailed can put people off trying to make maps. You don;t seem to get map editors with FPS games so much any more although I hear the new DOOM game had one. I only ever played the campaign in Reach, but I loved the forge mode in Halo 3. It was an absolute pig to use, did they make any user interface improvements in Reach? I created some really cool maps in Sandtrap but the object limit was very harsh which took some planning around.

Now I didn't play much of Halo 3 forge, hell I think it is my least played Halo game but what I can say about Reach is there's a lot of settings to mess around with, so every piece can be in just the right spot. There's no loading times when you change from human to floating robot (I'm looking at you Halo 4), and the graphics are probably my favourite in the series, not to mention the custom map designed for forge. So yeah, I'd say it has the best forge mode, as well as the best custom maps to download.

Tenchu 2 on PS1. Brilliant editor. Let you create pathing for the enemies, place objectives, set traps hours of fun creating missions in that one.

Eldar Scrolls series should probably get a mention too. People have created some superb mods for Morro, Obv and Skyrim with them.

Out of the ones i've used, i have a lot of love for Timesplitters 2 too, also. It was really pretty amazing just how much i could do with that one. It was pretty rough around the edges too, but i had a lot of fun making neat little challenge maps for friends.
I also really loved making maps and campaigns in the age of wonders games. Somewhere i still have the notes for the grand story campaign i made up for age of wonders shadow magic...
Probably best not to unearth that.

Please don't laugh but....Heroes of might and magic 3 great game, reasonable editor but lead to some fantastic single player levels and some really, really brilliant multiplayer ones.

Seconding this. A good range of Forerunner aesthetic, human and Covenant, with plenty of room and space to use it on the Forge World.

Yea it was quite detailed in paces with all the triggers and keycards and that, I certainly liked making zombie maps a lot haha!
I'm always making notes and drawings about maps and missions that will never get made, I think I like the exercise of designing them rather more than the difficultly of creating them and getting everything to work.

Neverwinter Nights had a really great editor that with enough time you could make a whole new game out of. There were quite a few custom multiplayer servers that were hand made by their admins.
Battlefield 1942's editor worked so well that one of the game design classes in my college made a Weird World War mod for it. Desert Combat was another fan made mod for BF1942 that paved the way for all of the modern stuff.
Many of the games that came out in the 2000-2003 era had really in depth and well done editors. We utilized many of these in my game design courses, Unreal was used the most.
Almost forgot the Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne editor which gave birth to a little custom map called DoTA.
