I don't get it, it says it's a 4X but it's only on one planet?
Doesn't that just make it a standard RTS? or turn based RTS?

I'm all for a great turn based 40k 4X game, but this dev doesn't inspire confidence in me.

I'd probably get better mileage out of a Stellaris mod.

I'll keep an eye on it, but I won't get my hopes up.

Jokes aside, I've heard some pretty bad things about Sanctus Reach, and this is from the same studio. I don't see a reason to try it, though that may change in future.

I am very confused by this as there are a ton of 4X games that only feature one planet.

Also turn based real time strategy.

There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

Looks kind of cool, but "research" shouldn't really be part of a 40K game.

4* games can be said to have started with Master of Magic which was set in a fantasy setting. Then it jumped to Master of Orion that has inspired the bulk of the space based 4* games.

But on land there's a good few Endless Legends; Fallen Enchantress Dominions (of which Dominions 5 launched today!) etc... are all 4*

Elbows wrote:I can't stand Slitherine games...they're normally just too awful.

Slitherine games can be decent, but I often get the feeling that a lot of their titles are just missing that litlte bit more of investment and content that would extend their life. As a whole I get an "eh" feeling about most of their games. A few neat gems, a few rough edges on a few. I think the core issue is that most are developed by small teams on small budgets.

I hope this one does well though - a 4* Warhammer 40K game would be very neat!

It's a Civilization style game, that sort of 4x. In fact, the screenshots make it look like a Civ5 mod. (With way too few factions for that type of game)
That and the talk of tech trees (which always seem laughable and entirely missing the themes when talking about 40k), leave me doubting.

The screenshots also make me all full of doubt, particularly in the area of faction balance. Image 4 is necrons vs guard, and once you learn to pick out units from the Overwhelmingly Brown Vortex that forms the color pallete, the feel is distinctly off. No way that necron force and that guard force are a reasonable match up, unless the game is completely unrecognizable.

Plus, Slitherine's 40k games have been either mediocre (Sanctus Reach) or actively terrible (Armaggeddon), and that was just trying to clone that old eldar game in the Panzer Corps style.

Clearly its not trying to emulate tabletop games, so tech upgrades, unlocking new units, research etc.. are likely all to be present as those are standard formats within that genre of games. Dawn of War had research upgrades and buildings in the first game; experience and unit upgrades in the second etc...

I really liked Sanctus Reach. The system was fine and all it really needed was more factions/longer content. I always take a look at 40K games when they appear, so will keep an eye on this'un :-)

Hmm, this certainly sounds interesting. I need more information and wish I could get into the Beta of it.

For the most part Slitherine is one of the best makers of 40K video games out there (which sadly is not saying much.) While not quite to the level of Chaos Gate and Final Liberation I find Sanctus Reach very enjoyable and close to Final Liberation. They just added the AM too. I am hoping for more there too.

While Armageddon was not perfect, I still think it was very good and conveyed some 40K flavor. Both games still have some areas that miss the mark, but overall I find them both to be good games set in the 40K universe.

It will be interesting to see how this develops. I'll reserve judgment till I get more information.

BTW, if you have not tried Sanctus Reach, it really is pretty good and as close to table top as I have found anymore. The UI is a bit clunky, but once you get used to it, it plays pretty well.

Thanks,
Duncan

I got to play Gladius, the new turn-based Warhammer 40k strategy game. I was also lucky to sit down with one of the developers, ask questions and get more information on this new title.

Thanks for the review. Very curious how this will work out. And especially thanks for the notice that they were looking for beta testers. I helped with Armageddon and would be really happy to help with this.

4x games started with the first of the civilization games in 91.

As per my discussion on their steam forums-

I was lucky enough for the PC setup with Gladius to be present at the Warhammer World Open Day today and had a small session playing the game, albeit without sound and without custom mouse settings! :(

As someone who knew nothing about this until I stumbled past it today, when I sat down I immediately felt like it played very similarly to Civ, the UI controlling units, directing and upgrading etc felt very familiar nearly instantly. I had the joy of playing Guardsman, and was in control of a few sentinels, a basilisk, some flak and a commisar (Who after issuing orders to bring "it" down I immediately suicided into the nearest scorpion looking thing) before finishing them off with the flak and moving on.

After a brief play around, I felt satisfied enough to continue following where this goes and picking it up if the price is right, the orks I roughly saw on the screen next to me looked far nicer then the IG did

Pretty much overall, to me it felt like Warhammer Civ and was decent enough.
