Hello all. I'm thinking of getting back into 40k after a hiatus of about a year and a half. I'm mostly aware of( the changes in 8th edition, but not entirely, and could use a bit of help in throwing a list together. My old army, which was all Sallies in drop pods and a TFC, supported by a Storm Wing, doesn't look like it's going to work in this edition, and I've been thinking of trying something a bit different. I've got some ideas on where to start, but I could really use some help fleshing out this list, or at least some pointers on how effective all the units are. So, to business. I was thinking of making this a 2000 point army, with two detachments--a Batallion detachment for the main force, and an Aux. Superheavy detachment. I'm torn between Salamanders and Iron Hands (as Sons of Medusa) for CT--the latter is better known for fielding large numbers of tanks, but the boys in green seem like they have better rules this edition, with more special characters to boot. Both chapters could be expected to have a fair number of "relic" vehicles, which I would like to field.
The Superheavy detachment would have a Fellblade in it, which would be the anchor of my gunline, and can reasonably take on either hordes or tanks/MCs. For troops, I was thinking three squads of Scouts: a five-man squad of snipers to camp on backfield objectives and knock out enemy support characters, a ten-man squad (probably split into combat sqauds) with camo-cloaks that could deploy midfield. These guys would serve two purposes: to go for any objectives in the middle of the board, and to limit how close an enemy could DS to my forcess. The last unit would be five scouts with Shotguns, loaded up into a Land Speeder Tempest with a HF. They would zip around the battlefield to apply the hurt where it's needed, and possibly go for objectives in the enemy's deployment zone in the endgame.
After that, my plans get a bit hazy. HQ will definitely include a Techmarine, Vaylund Cal seems like a nice choice as his rerolling to-hit lets him pull double duty as a Captain. I think I'd like my second HQ to be either Bray'arth Ashmantle or the Chaplain Dreadnought. I also want a Sicaran in there somewhere--either the vanilla one or the Punisher variant. Beyond that, I'm really not sure. Would a Stormraven still be viable to drop my beatstick HQ dread into CQC? The Leviathan dread looks badass, but is it worth taking if I already have the very beefy Ashmantle? Your suggestions on how to flesh this list out a bit more would be greatly appreciated.
