So how is the PS3 as a blu-ray player?

I tend to stay WAY behind the technology curve (newest game system I own is a Wii), but I was thinking about finally getting a Blu-ray player since I think I can get a used PS3 for around the cost of a new low-end Blu-ray player. Any tips for where to get a reasonably priced used PS3? I'm guessing craig's list would probably be my best bet.

Not sure about the US, but you can find them pretty cheaply in electronics pawn shops over here.

Plus, PS3 games are pretty cheap now too.

Try and get a later model, the early ones did have a small tendency to melt their motherboards as the CPU had poor welding.

It's good. At the time I bought mine, I bought it because it was one of the highest rated blu-ray players at the time.

I am curious what makes a high rated bluray player?

Is the PS3 quiet? I feel like that's my main criteria for a bluray player. I bought a bluray player for my computer because I use my computer like a HTPC but I never use the bluray because it makes too much noise. I think it's always been a problem with PC CD, DVD and bluray players, they're designed for extremely high speeds for high data transfer rates and when they throttle down to play a movie at 1x speed they often make way too much noise.

It's not deafening or anything, but when I spend lots of money on a good screen and lots of money on a good sound system and lots of money on a quiet PC with quiet fans, having a constant drone in the background from the player itself gets on my nerves.

I also bought my PS3 mainly as a BluRay player, and secondly for the PS exclusive titles.

I does make some noise when playing, but not much and it's not disturbing.
Don't get a used one, PS3 Slim models are pretty cheap with ~120-150€.
You don't need one with a big harddrive, just buy it separately.
I think 500GB is max, 2.5". You need a frame for the HDD, goes on Ebay for ~10€
Putting it in is super easy.
