All for under 1500pts. Can chop and change if you need HG in one detachment (i.e. hive fleet) or another.
For context that is 36 mines, 18 caused directly and a further 18 deployed. A huge footprint of deployed units each turn. Additional spores because, they are a bit more deadly and will further dilute/distract/disrupt the opponent.
The hive guard add some quality VoF, also long range and can hide. Good targets for the double-tap stratagem. Only thing I think you could add would be a lictor Trygon! & devil gants for some screen clearing potential. Possibly some rippers/cheap gants for screening & objective grabbing.

Nothing but Warriors and Genestealers with Extended Carapace as your main infantry, any kinds of monsters as your big stuff. 3+/2+ armor saves across the board with jorm trait.
"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"
There's good old carnifex spam. Old One Eye, leading 16 or 17 carnifexes in a 2k list. Fun, but good luck getting enough carnifex models for it though. They're selling out everywhere.

ie. not generic, well balanced army. Something that is enjoyable to play and something different than the norm.
Fire away!
That isnt what a gimmick is, a Gimmick is just another word for "trick". A gimmick in 40k normally doesnt always work and/or hard to get to work, and/or only works against certain things, but when it does work it normally does something crazy.
Your looking for something different, Then Warriors, Shrikes, Ravagers heavy army would do.
Nids have many viable types of lists and is hard to play something others are not other than Warriors.

In a pure objective based game jormungandr termagants backed by tervigons would be funny. They'd need to kill 30 in 1 turn to not see the squad just refill.

I'm doing an almost all Warriors with Deathspitters army and it's pretty great. Using Jorm for 3+ sv. A couple Primes and Neurothropes for HQs and Smiting harder units.
1,960 points
7 Neurothropes
180 Termagants, 120 of them with Devouerers.
9 Venomthrope
Your game plan is to get shot for 6 turns and still have models on the board.
Each 'gaunt squad puts out 60 shots at anything that gets into range.
Everything has 6+ FNP.
Everything has -1 to be hit for the 2-3 turns it takes to focus down that many Venomthropes.
If you have the models, the 3 Venomthrope squads can turn into 2 Malanthhropes.
If you want antitank, they can turn into ~6 Hive Guard.
If you don't care about shooting back, you can trade each d-gaunt for 2 fleshborer gaunts-300+ fearless bodies on the table, walking forward.

List 1: 10 Flyrants with varying equipment
List 2: All the sporocysts/harpies/Biovores, drown them in mines
List 3: Ravener bomb - take a max squad of raveners and use them to deepstrike like 100 genestealers with extended carapaces for the 3+ save
18 Hive guard, ripper swarms for late game objectives for 1,000 points is always good. Remainder of list I would go 9 biovores, mucolid spores and some synapse HQ to get 12 CP. Just use double shot strategem on hive guard and with biovores that's a lot of shooting from behind LOS blocking terrain.
Keep rippers and an HQ off the board until you need them.

I’ve been running a 3 sporocyst list with a bunch of biovores and mucolids and it’s been working pretty well. Drop the cysts in a curtain around the enemy, bring up 30 gants with a trygon to clear chaff, then play space invaders with spore mines. Mines are a valuable offensive and defensive tool, because while they do damage, they also block assaults and eat shots. Canny players have started focusing the sporocysts though, which is making me wonder if I should throw a bunch of genestealers in with the trygon to present a more immediate threat.
