Hey folks,

I haven't gotten the Gang Wars supplement yet but I do have a few un-built boxes of sector mechanicus, and I am wondering if there are any specific rules or restrictions about what kind of terrain can be constructed. If anyone has their hands on the book can you confirm/deny if there are specific restrictions for terrain layout/dimensions/parts to use?

I'm interested in:

1) Are there any forbidden builds (eg can't have overhang over certain amount, can't have a walkway smaller than a certain amount)
2) Are there requirements for height of each level?
3) Is there a limit to how many levels can be added?
4) How big is a standard table?
5) Is any material considered usable, or does it have to be a GW terrain kit?

Thanks in advance guys!

Nope, no rules about how to build it - just how the models move around and interact with it.

So for instance, the overhang you mentioned? If it's less than X, it can be ignored by a model. That sort of stuff.

No height min or max.

No

Depends really. Most people play on 4x4, but as you build up, you may want to reduce the footprint from a practicality consideration.

The rules are based on the Sector Mechanicus, but are general purpose.

Is it still based on 4"moves with 1"vertical up ladders counting as 1" of horizontal move?

I skimmed the rules yesterday and it seems to indicate that you still measure the amount up, but ladders don't double the distance required to climb.

So you can climb other things, it's just slow. Ladders don't slow you down.

The different gangs don't share a stat line any more. Goliaths are M 4", Escher are M 5". The Sector Mechanicum terrain pieces have 5" high levels, but there's absolutely no reason to stick to that. Make your terrain 3" high to fit with the Sector Imperialis terrain or the old Necromunda bulkheads or any height you like.

There's a "step up" rule; a change in height of ... I can't remember if it's 1" or 0.5" or less - is not an impediment to movement, so a model can move up a staircase or a pile of crates without needing to measure the vertical distance.

It is very important to note, that fall damage rules have been updated to make it possible to survive falling from Sector Mechanicus 5" levels. And jumping down no longer means auto-pinned.

I have a q: How much cult mechanicus terrain do you need to play true Necromunda at a minimum? i.e do you need like 6 refineries lol

The new Promethium Refinery kit that GW put out? That'd be one building in Necromunda. Necromunda was usually 4-6 buildings of a similar size, some higher, some smaller, plus connecting walkways and a few other odds and ends.

The Gang War book has a picture of a decent table and a list of what's involved:

2x Promethium Forge
3x Galvanic Magnavent
2x Ferratonic Furnace
1x Alchomite Stack
1x Ferratonic Incinerator
1x Munitorum Armoured Containers
2x Necromunda Barricades and Objectives
1x Thermic Plasma Regulators
1x Thermic Plasma Conduits
4x Realm of Battle: Sector Imperalis Tiles

That last one is entirely optional.

There is pretty much no affordable upper limit on how many Sector Mechanicus sets you can put on a 4'x4' table. I have accumulated quite a lot by now (only a bit less than on H.B.M.C "stockpile" photo ) and still buy anything new GW releases to add variety and "mid-levels". Shame on GW that they made only "themed sprues", I would give a lot for separate sets of ladders, railings, supports and straight walkways...

The more you put on a table the more interesting Necro gets, both old and new version, as shooting becomes less reliable, sneaking/hiding/manouvering becomes more important (in oldmunda you can actually get into melee) and so on... The only drawback to having very dense terrain is game lenght, so if you prefer playing short games then you don't really have to invest in terrain that much.

Build it up bit by bit.

Start with a reasonable investment in terrain. Whether GW bought, third party or homemade. Or even a mix.

From there, get a few games under your belt, see how you feel. Some favour a medium amount - enough that peeps can sneak about, but not so much that long range is pointless. Others, bit more sparse (sneaking about involves unavoidable exposure). Me? I like it really dense (stop tittering in the back row!), but with deliberate fire corridors.

There is no right way to do it, other than what you and yours feel works best.

I also like it exactly like that, makes for some "Enemy at the gates" style crossing decisions and nicely divides gang members into subgroups that have to work independently but in coordination with each other.

Just selling a walkway bundle would go a long way to helping. Being only able to get straights in two sets, one of which is perpetually out of stock, is quite annoying.

That's the one

And yes, straight walkways are "the most precious" at the moment - I have two SW:A boxes and Ferratonic Incinerator worth of them, but it's still too damn little... And I don't really blame people for buying all available Ferratonic Incinerators instantly - this is the most usefull box IMHO.

I just unpacked my Plasma Regulators and one bit of info that fellow Sector Mechanicus fans might find usefull/frustrating - platform level on those isn't "half height", it's two platform thicknesses higher...

3" high building are hard to get hands into for movement. Would suggest 3.5 or 4" level heights and just count them as 3".

If you don't mind laser cut mdf, TTcombat do a good range for necromunda, and very reminiscent of the original terrain.

That's just going to be confusing. Why not just make the building levels any height you like and measure the actual distances? In fact, having some buildings with different heights of storeys will add some variation to the board. Combining Sectr Mechanicum terrain and Sector Imperialis terrain already gives you a mix of 3£ and 5" levels, so the game will be OK with that.

Yeah, that plastic is much harder than usual. Not the case for the new Plasma scenery tho, it cleans up like normal GW plastic.

I reckon that multi levelled terrain would be ace.

Run up the wrong stairwell, and you could find yourself out of position.

For me, it’s all about forcing the players to assess the lay of the land.

If you’re a HTH Gang, you need to work for it, because a well played Shooty Gang can possible get the hell out of dodge.

If some levels are different than others - say, you're using a mix of Sector Mechanicum and Sector Imperialis - all you need is a few 1" and 2" stair pieces you can use to join the gaps.

Look at factories - there's always bits where the walkways go up four steps over a machine then back down. It adds a bit more cover to otherwise empty walkways, apart from anything else.

My Cities of Death terrain is asking you to hold its beer.

Sector Mechanicus stuff is a dream compared to the old CoD stuff.

Really don't do that. If everything is at the same hight then you're just creating a new default surface.

Honestly that's my biggest problem with the Sector Mechanicus stuff, it's 5" tall rather than Necro's old 3", meaning that having more than 2 stories makes it very, very high. That said, having it across one level, "plaining" as I call it, just means everything either takes place on that level, or the ground, so why bother having all that terrain?

Cities of Death weren't this much of a nightmare to clip out, I swear it!

Still, really need to crack on with mine, get it all clipped out and have a play around - see how the current collection looks on a 4x4 or a 3x3. From there, I can decide just how much more I'll be needing to buy.

Note not 'if I'll need more'. We all always need more.

Yeah but you had to sand mould lines of CoD stuff for ever. If that stuff wasn't so obviously grey it would'a looked like I had cocaine habit after building a few buildings.

Sector mechanicus 5" height is quite unfortunate.... Some of Sector Mechanicus parts (mostly from Alchomite Stack box and alike) are "half height" and can be used to make 2,5" midlevels. New Plasma Regulators give you basis for 3" level, which combined with the rest of the terrain must either stand without anything above them or leave only 2" space left above. I'm now in the process of rearranging my terrain (fortunately still unglued) to have varying heights and not only two distinct "storeys".

What I meant was that it's multi-level, but each level is a consistent height like the old ne round stuff so that bridges can be added easily between anything in any direction.

lol HBMC you interested in a crap ton of spacemarines and FW stuff? I'll take them boxes off your hands

Seriously though, GW should have more bundles that are well priced for high volume buys. They should also have a separate walkways kit as you guys mentioned... one can hope.
