I had a nosy at the new (free) official imperial assault app.

It's not what I expected at all.

Essentially it's a brand new 4 player xoop campaign and game mode, kinda independent of the skirmish and 4v1 games. So you are Not playing, for example 'Bespins Gambit' etc, it's a whole new mini campaign.

The campaign looks to be about 5 or 6 missions long, as you seem to level up at the end of each mission.

The expansions you own basically add to the hero and villain pool, though they don't look fully implemented yet.

The campaign comes in a normal and hard mode where it looks like there will be extra campaigns released as paid for DLC.

Overall, it seems nice to have and should be a fun few evenings but essentially it seems like FFG went to an awful lot of effort for a small payoff. I think if you like Xcom or Elder Sign Omens, you might have fun with this but you probably won't get your moneys worth out of Imperial Assault if you're buying it solely for this, but it is a nice bonus if you already have the game.

Thanks for the heads up! I've had the base game for a while and was considering picking up some of the expansions to play with the App. Looks like at the moment they don't really add anything. Good to know.

The heroes will add to it, aside from marking when they die, most of the hero things are done on the board.

The allies and villains seemed to be kinda marked as 'coming soon' though.

Ran through the first mission tutorial. Excited to play more and see how it goes.

I'll be curious to run through the campaign and see how well they implemented the few ally packs I own. The original campaign did an excellent job integrating the villains to a point, but the hero cameos were pretty gratuitous. This system seems like it expands a little more naturally than the campaign (unless they still throw tokens at you regularly like I saw in the tutorial) but that might come at the cost of any character out of the villains if they're truly interchangeable.

Hopefully they'll repackage the old expansions a bit like they did for Mansions of Madness as well.

My wife and I played though the first (and currently only) campaign. We loved it, since before we had to play vs each other. Allies come up between mission, so you run a kind of sub-mission to make them available. After that you can take them if you want, but they are only available for a few missions if you take them or not.

Other than what's been said, the only other change is that the items you can buy between missions is a smaller pool (4 total) and the app changes their cost (always lower that I've seen).

The app has been updated now to support all enemies from the big expansions and the smaller enemy boxes.

They have it working relatively well so any imperial group will pick from any imperial unit you have models for and the scoundrels groups pull from scoundrel units you may have.

The one slight issue in the current setup is that there is a shared boss unit pool so you can end up with either an imperial or scoundrel unit. I presume they have done this due to the fact that there are a lack of scoundrel boss encounters in the initial campaign and they wouldn’t see the board otherwise. This did lead to a situation where in the first mission I was fighting off the imperials nicely when Jabba burst through the bushes with a unit of flying Storm Troopers as backup. Guess he heard that Han was on Yarvin

Hopefully we see a new campaign soon that takes advantage of the other tile sets and others more Scoundral encounters.
