Like do they exist, games with larger model counts (that are in the sci fi genre) out there?
Seems every one I come across is a handful of models. I love sci fi as a genre and miss playing sci fi games.
Fantasy has 9th age, which I adore but there's nothing I can find that can replace 40k.

So I turn to you knowledgeable folks for answers.

Mantic has the Warpath game.

Gates of Antares is the only one which springs to mind for me, although I'm sure there are others on the market.

I guess it also depends what it is you're actually looking for... are you looking for 28mm scale miniatures like/similar to 40K? By sci-fi are you willing to look at games which may be focused on space warfare for example? Would you be interested in something of a similar scale to Epic 40k?

I realise this is a personal point but to me I've never really taken to 40k when played with what I would consider silly amounts of models, I always viewed Space Marine/Epic 40K for larger scale fights which is something I miss dearly. It is fair to say that 40k does have dominance in the sci-fi area when it comes to table-top games these days but there are options out there.

Another vote for Warpath.

It's streamlined to work really well, even as the game sizes get really large. There's quite free-form list construction, with great balance.

I must admit, I quite like some of the models for Warpath.

One of the biggest obstacles I've ran into when it comes to other games is finding players locally to enjoy it with.

I took a look at that warpath game and it looks pretty cool.

I'd have thought DZC would be a good shout? Especially as it's just got a new owner and is about to ride the crest of a new edition wave?

DZC isn't 28mm.

Fairy muff, didn't see the supplementary.

Maelstrom's Edge has smaller units, but looks like it scales up to large numbers of units on the table.

You can also look into 15mm scifi, which has a lot of good looking lines available and easy to get a lot of the table.

It seems to be widely regarded as what 40K should have become if the management let the designers do their thing. Haven't heard any complaints about it actually, beyond some griping about the mini's range (or the fact some are metal).

I would have thought that this would be better suited in Misc. Sci-Fi Miniature Games, but there's also Void 1.1 from Scotia Grendel (originally by I-Kore/Urban Mammoth). The rules are free, the miniatures range is fairly comprehensive (or you could just use GW Imperial Guard, Space Marines, Necrons, Adeptus Mechanicus and Tyranids as stand-ins) and pretty reasonably priced. I've never ordered from Scotia Grendel, though, so I don't know what their service is like.

If you want to be even more old-school (early 90s rather than late 90s), look at the Kryomek game also from Scotia.

Antares is a solid game system. The models are gak, but the rules are great. I wish 40k was Antares.

I tried pitching using Antares rules with 40k models but that didn't go anywhere.

It depends on what you are looking for. There are so many out there that you have to honestly be specific on what your style is.

Maelstrom's Edge. Tightly written ruleset (although the tutorial vids are helpful to start) with top quality figures. Some great novels and background setting available.

Warpath. Decent game, some good new plastics available as well. Personally I like Firefight - to me it's sized perfectly to the times I remember having fun with 40k.

Gates of Antares. I love Bolt Action and GoA use similar rules. I'd love to play, but MEdge, 40k and Warpath have built up enough figures to last my painting a long long while, and also my wife's acceptance of how much plastic/metal/resin I need. (Along with Dracula's America, Gaslands, Devil's Run, KoW, Necromunda, Deadzone, Frostgrave, Rogue Stars etc etc)

Maelstrom's Edge is more of a skirmish-sized game. The rules are superb, and it's balanced, but it would take a LONG time to play a bigger game.

* Maelstrom's Edge -> Like a lot of people said more skirmish-size but goes up pretty nicely to bigger games, just not to big games (They work, but take time).

* BtGoA -> Solid system, great rules and the miniatures are actually kinda nice.

* Konflict 47 -> Not your typical scify game as it is more Weird War 3 but I would consider it 'coming up' scify. Great rules, great miniatures.

* Warpath -> Condensed rules, solid, some of the new miniatures are just great. One of the best rules for very large games.

* Warzone -> Great solid rules, great miniatures. With the 2ed Edition does large games even better. And some of the last releases are big models.

This are basically the contenders in 28mm (the big ones anyways). Most of those systems work great with smaller amount of miniatures, so a lot of people start small and that is what you see. But the systems scale very well.

I don't know if I really have a style of things, miniatures I certainly have a preferred style.
I suppose I find old games very charming.

I'll second Void 1.1. It'll always have that special place in my heart as being the first game I played outside the GW ecosystem.

It's a little clunky in places as it uses D10s. You'll need a lot of them and I seem to found multiples of them cannot be read as quickly as D6s, however it does allow for a greater gradient in stats. The cardboard templates will need replacing too (only the teardrop one is different to the old 40k ones IIRC), other than that it plays very much in spirit and scale like 2nd ed. 40k with a "large" army probably consisting of about 40 or so models.

Big fan here too, fielding VASA and some Viridian.

I have always loved the VOID line of miniatures.

yeah really like how they look, but was even more happy with the rules. VASA has some cool stuff, had the hardest time taking on the viridians (dinosaurs and suchnot) but usually could pound Junkers into their namesake

void models are awesome, i only own 2 though (sniper dudes, one crouching).

edit: turns out they were urban war... what's the difference between these games?
