Which flyer do you think is better in general and specifically for rooting out hard to reach enemy fire base(s)?

Stormhawk is better vs flyers, Stormtalon is better vs ground targets. Generally, Stormtalons would be more useful... but if your meta likes flyers a lot, I'd go with the other one

Stormhawk is actually better versus any unit with Fly keyword.

The stormtalon is definitely better against firebases. It can shut a unit down by charging it, which a stormhawk is totally unable to do.

Good catch!

Then, if your meta has lots of Eldar, Tau, Necrons and Jump Pack weirdos, get the Stormhawk

here's a decent article i found.

http://www.3plusplus.net/2017/08/stormhawk-interceptor-vs-stormtalon-gunship/

Personally i think the storm talon is the way to go, but then i can get 2 las cannons on it, and that's what my army needs

My analysis aligned with what 3plusplus had to say. I am preferring the hawk since it throws out more lead.

I'm not too sure whether marines should use flyers at all at the moment. They've had their prices raised too much I think, and they make it easier to table you.

I lost a game at a 2k tournament in which I was running a xiphon and stormraven. Both are great planes and both have subsequently had their prices increased. But by taking them both I had over 500 points worth of stuff that my opponent didn't have to kill in order to table me. He never once fired a shot at either plane and went for the tabling from the start. By the end I'd killed more of his army than he had of mine (it was messy!) and was way ahead on the kill point mission we were playing, but I lost.

To be fair this is less of a problem if you're just using a single plane, like a stormtalon. But the more you spend on aircraft the easier you are to table.

I've run both (though the hawk less so, my local meta is light on flyers), and while they don't hold a candle to the stormraven, the talon has so far been a bit more helpful. I run it with the typhoon and twin cannons, and mostly use it to deal with infantry and light armor while leaving heavy armor for my own tanks and similar. This lets it's fill a useful role and keep the pressure off my own tanks, without letting it get to dangerous and start attracting too much fire. A hawk with lascannons and missiles makes an OK tank hunter, but it's also an expensive way to do that compared to a lascannon predator, and while it's usually harder to hit, it's also a worse shot. I would generally suggest the talon for any ground attack roles, if you absolutely need a flyer for that.

I don't really think you can say that the talon is a worse shot than a predator. It gets strafing run against anything that can't fly, effectively cancelling out the penalty for moving. It's probably harder for the enemy to kill, thanks to being hard to hit. It has the option of stopping and hitting ground targets on a 2+.

But then of course it costs quite a bit more than a predator. It's a little softer against some weapons (though not S8+, which is where a lot of AT weapons fit).

I don't like the typhoon though. Missile launchers are just worse than lascannons but cost the same. The frag missiles are only better than lascannons against chaff infantry, and even then they aren't actually very effective. I don't buy the idea of making a unit less effective (but no less expensive) to make it a lower-priority target.

I prefer the talon, but for the kit it is a super easy to magnetize kit modeling wise

It looks like the Hawk then is pretty even for that same role if you want one that's slightly (really slightly) less killy at ground targets thanks to an extra weapon, really good against anything with Fly (which adds to versatility), and a little bit more durable. That's good news for me because I think the model looks way cooler lol

But like others have said, while missile launchers are kind of neat in that they offer some versatility, they aren't worth it at the same price as lascannons.
