Been thinking about getting back into xwing after leaving for Warhammer. I quit playing just as scum arrived. When I started out I bought two starter sets an A wing ,Y wing ,B wing ,bunch of tie fighters, the fire spray and falcon. But was watching a game today at my store and looking at the new cards they had And man have things changed.

Do I have to buy all new cards/ships to even remotely play competitive or to play at all?Are my cards/ships still legal? Thanks in advance

You don't have to buy new stuff in order to play, you will however need to buy new stuff in order to be competitive (not least the new core set for the damage deck). There have been a lot of changes to the game (including some hard nerfs) which can be found here;

Best bet is find a local group and see if you can play using their stuff for awhile to see if you want to get back into it.

Technically you don't need to buy anything, but like ingtaer said the FAQ is pretty much required reading, maybe buy the newer starter for spare dice/temples etc and the revised damage deck

Outside of official tournaments just use full text printouts from a list builder rather than chasing actual upgrade cards

X-Wing is in a weird place at the mo, its undoubtedly a good game but FFG's design Jawa's seem a bit befuddled of late with some strange ideas creeping in

The game has become more popular than FFG could possibly imagine. As such, we have simply run out of design space. It's beginning to bog down under its own success.

Not really. It's getting bogged down because the design team doesn't have a true grasp of good balance, and a lack of general vision about each of the factions. There is still plenty of design space, and plenty of ships to make.

The real issues are that they do not currently have any good grasp of how to balance the three factions against each other while giving them each their own unique feel.

The game does partly suffer from having outgrown the original system, it could use an expansion of the dice mechanics. Like going to Armada route, so having multiple types of dice for each type. Like 2 different kinds of attack and defense dice. Just to get more room for variation.

Definitely second the use of a squad builder in order not to have to chase all the cards (Sakura this is isn't).

Do you have a faction that turns you on more than the others?

So, in summary, I'm wrong, but the problems with the game boil down to exactly what I said?

Design space =/= dice mechanics.

Design space refers to potential for new objects in the game. In this case, it would be new space ships to add or new upgrades which do stuff within the ruleset.

What making the dice system deeper allows is for better control over the balance and more robust game mechanics.

Gentlemen, please take this to the X-Wing 2.0 discussion, if you don't mind?
