So I'm thinking about starting a Imperial guard army, but I was kinda wondering if I should think about waiting for new models for a regiment?
I figure you guys will tell me no, so is there anywhere to buy Cadian rebreather helmets instead of forge world?

Also what would you guys recommend I pick up?
Are heavy weapons teams worth it?

no, codex is out, so there is no hope of new GW official regiment; check out:
http://madrobotminiatures.com/
for awesome 3rd party conversion parts or full squads, Victoria miniatures too, but they're in aussieland.

cadian hostile torsos can be had in recasters, pick up whatever looks cool to you, almost all units in the codex are good, HWTs are good embedded in infantry squads, if by themselves, keep them cheap.

The chances of new guardsmen models anytime soon is close to zero, I think. If you want them you might as well get started now.

^^ What they said. It doesn't matter much, as there are tons of choices right now, from GW or elsewhere. Just take a bit and think what ~100 models might look like in your scheme.

Just to echo the above, it is unlikely that any new kits will come out within the next 12-24 months at least - nothing is certain though but I wouldn't hold off waiting unless you had other armies to keep you busy for a while.

also in regards to using 3rd party bits, whilst most people won't have a problem playing against it, be mindful in the stores (if any) that you intend to play at - some GW stores/events specifically may have an issue with non-GW models

"Courage and Honour. I hear you murmur these words in the mist, in their wake I hear your hearts beat harder with false conviction seeking to convince yourselves that a brave death has meaning.
There is no courage to be found here my nephews, no honour to be had. Your souls will join the trillion others in the mist shrieking uselessly to eternity, weeping for the empire you could not save.

To the unfaithful, I bring holy plagues ripe with enlightenment. To the devout, I bring the blessing of immortality through the kiss of sacred rot.
And to you, new-born sons of Gulliman, to you flesh crafted puppets of a failing Imperium I bring the holiest gift of all.... Silence."

Don't buy GW guardsmen.

Build your own guardsmen here..

As others have said, little-to-no chance we'll see a new plastic infantry kit show up. In the last ~10 years they've done, what, Scions? Catachan and Cadian Command Squads? I found it a little surprising that we were still using just about the same infantry squad models as we were back in 3e...

Actually madrobot linked above also has a custom unit builder as well. Go with whatever site builds the unit you want.

I have basically no interest in playing guard, but if I did I would be building steel legion using probably mad robot shocktroop arms and great coats and such.

Actually the whole shocktroop line on madrobot is just steel legion.

I'll say, that unit building site might be useful for doing my Necromunda gang...need to check into that...

Indeed; I wish I had seen them sooner! I was originally split between Krieg and Steel Legion at first, as when I perused the GW webstore I somehow got the idea that Legion was back in production...

I opted for a headswap with Pig Iron (a common choice) with a slight mod for the torso, which may be of interest for fraser1191
Spoiler:

Pretty straight forward, and they've grown on me I'll admit.

Alright so I'm kinda mapping out my purchases, so far I got:

Hq
Lord Commissar
Tempestor prime

Troops
6 10 man infantry squads. I don't know if I should run them naked or what. I also want scions but I was thinking of just having a patrol detachment for them

Elites
Veteran squad. Probably with plasma guns

Fast attack
Scout sentinel
Armoured sentinel
Hell hound

Heavy Support
Just a heavy support team with mortars. I don't know if they are good and there's so many different types of Lehman Russ' s I'm not sure what to take

To add to the 3rd party pile, Victoria Miniatures does high quality resin, and also offers a 'build your own' regiment approach.

Your first list there seems pretty reasonable for diversity. You'd probably want to get an ordinary company commander as well. Very versatile and strong unit for almost any list. Your infantry squads should be armed with some combination of heavy and special weapon unless you want them strictly for bubble wrapping important units, but you don't really have one worth bubble wrapping, so they may as well try and put some damage down with a lascannon and plasma gun.

The best Russes are the basic Russ, the Executioner, the Punisher, and to a lesser extent, the Demolisher. Eradicator, Exterminator, and Vanquisher are pretty garbage.

Drop the Sentinels. Not competitive, as I'm told.

Mortars are good.

For your Russes, take a few basic ones and a Punisher. The rest aren't worthwhile, especially not the Vanquisher or Exterminator (the dual autocannon one).

So how do people fill out their fast attack slots for the big detachment seperate hell hound units/variants?

Also yes my plan is to use at least 2 infantry squads as objective holders/deep strike denial.
I also forgot to add 2 chimeras to the list. I have marines so I typically put my guys in boxes lol

Rough Riders are, evidently, competitive. Hellhounds are as well, except I can't find anyone that has them in stock right now

If you're going to have Sentinels, go all scout - you can use that pre-game move to extend your bubble before their alpha strike.

Also keep in mind that Sentinels are not a Squadron - if you take more than one per slot, they're a unit that needs to remain coherent and you can (evidently) lose one to morale check failures.

So for my first 1k points I swapped out my Lord commisar for a tank commander, the prime for a company commander.
Removed the vets for a platoon commander.
Removed both sentinels
Added a standard leman russ
All together it's 959. So I'll have room for upgrades to the infantry squads.

I plan on starting this army in the spring seeing as he the battleforce box is sold out. But also cause there's a rumour that that's when sisters come out. Apparently it's sometime in the first quarter of the year. But I still have tons of stuff to still paint

Also is there no company commander model?

There's one in the Command boxes for Cadians and Catachans. The Cadian one is actually kind of cool. He has a longer coat and you can give him some cool options.

Half the fun is building your own from the bits, or going to any of the excellent third party sites to pick out one you like. Forgeworld has some nice options too.
