Hello, my original account was dementedwombat. Some old users might remember me. I was fairly active in Tau tactics and was a general all around high quality gakposter. I'm going to be playing 40k again for the first time in ages and need some advise to remember how all this works.

So, some old friends and I all have the opportunity to get together and we're going to be playing some 40k, using whatever edition was most current before the rules completely changed (I think it's 7th...). 1000 points. The person running the game pretty much said "no crazy stuff that will break the game". No super-heavies, fliers, formations, allies, monstrous creatures, or main battle tanks (by whatever nebulous definition that means, I think I managed to settle on "no vehicles in the heavy support slot"), only troops can hold objectives.

The people I will be up against will be probably imperial guard (I know he likes veteran squads in chimeras, and he made sure to mention the flame tank isn't a "main battle tank"), tyranid genestealers, and blood angels. I'll be playing Tau since it's the only army I've ever played. So, the question I have now is "what the heck do I take"? I remember I used to make my army "core" be two units of fire warriors in transports and an ethereal. That should do pretty good. I'll be taking a crisis suit squad, either plasma or missile pod. If I have any points left over I'll take a broadside or two to deal with whatever light vehicles end up being fielded.

Does that sound reasonable? Anything else that might do better? Piranhas are allowed, but I never really used them. I also remember markerlights being ridiculously good, so a unit of pathfinders would be nice, but I'm not sure if I can fit them at 1000.

For any ancient graybeards out there who might remember me, my username was once "dementedwombat". That was long ago in another life though.

Well, Self Propelled Artillery and Infantry Fighting Vehicles aren't Main Battle Tanks.

I'd bring 3 Land Raiders.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

Markerlights have their uses but are no longer the massive multiplier they used to be.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the current consensus for successful Tau at the moment is Commanders loaded out for alpha strikes with drones everywhere.

"Courage and Honour. I hear you murmur these words in the mist, in their wake I hear your hearts beat harder with false conviction seeking to convince yourselves that a brave death has meaning.
There is no courage to be found here my nephews, no honour to be had. Your souls will join the trillion others in the mist shrieking uselessly to eternity, weeping for the empire you could not save.

To the unfaithful, I bring holy plagues ripe with enlightenment. To the devout, I bring the blessing of immortality through the kiss of sacred rot.
And to you, new-born sons of Gulliman, to you flesh crafted puppets of a failing Imperium I bring the holiest gift of all.... Silence."

Note from my local tau player

Commanders all the fusion

XV8 - double fusion/flame, (for a more punchy drop Stealth w/ beacon)

Firewarriors in 6 man, with markers (support fireblade/ethereal)
Breachers

Pathfinders are... good if they survive... but these guys are basically doa if you put them forward. use firewarrior markers and drones.

Hazards if you got'em, double burst with adv target, volume of fire alone is solid anti infantry.

Y'Vahra costly at 1k, but oh all the fun.

Broadside missle batteries with adv targeting

Hammerheads at least 2, preferably 3 to 4 with farstrike

Drones are your friends, abuse the ever living, out of them.

In war there is poetry; in death, release.
