Hello everyone,
Long time gamer returning to the hobby after a long break. Just moved to Nottingham and went to my local GW store for some paints etc to kick start the hobby again. Found the prices to be a bit much for me so thought I'd ask the good people of dakka dakka if they know of any acceptable alternatives for citadel supplies? Preferably at less cost

All can be found on Amazon:
Revell Contacta glue (when the nozzle blocks up, hold a lighter under until the tip flares) + Humbrol liquid poly cement (snip the brush in the lid off & use an old paint brush = better control. no need to clean the brush after)
Needle files
Xuron clippers
wax sculpting tools
hobby knife - I use a Swann Morton with retractable blade & bought a 100 pack of 10A blades
pin vice with a palm guard & a set of mini drill bits eg: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Proops-number-Drills-Swivel-Postage/dp/B00W14LO62/ref=sr_1_3?s=diy&ie=UTF8&qid=1513034867&sr=1-3&keywords=pin+vice
green stuff from here: http://heresyminiatures.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=66_69&products_id=172
keep it in the freezer to keep it fresh. you shouldn't need to buy any more for quite some time!
For super glue I just use a generic brand from a local railway model shop
As for paints, there's quite a choice. I use GW paints & inks + MIG weathering powders. There are plenty of online retailers that do discounts. I use gamingfigures.com for a lot of my GW discount buying

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!! |

Or you could use local model shops.
Just googling; there is "Gee Dee Hobbies & Models" on Heathcoat street not too far from the centre. There's also an art shop on the grounds of Nottingham Trent Uni.
There is an online store based in in Lenton (its right next to warlord games and Northstar) called arcanesceneryandmodels.co.uk which is where I go online for everything I can't get locally.
I think Warlord might have a shop you can pop into there.

Definitely gee dee, great range of hobby supplies, including Vallejo and tamiya paints, and proper superglues/plastic glues/epoxy glues.
If you go to warlord on lenton boulevard, there is also a wealth of little companies, like north star, in the small industrial unit immediately behind it (around the car park), which is well worth a look around.

Thank you everyone for your response, much appreciated. I've only really used citadel paints right from the pot, any advise around trying out army painter or Vallejo paints and brushes?

Just go for it. You'll need something to drop the paint onto, like a palette. The drying time for Vallejo is much longer than citadel, so easier to blend. Be careful to properly read the label as it is easy to pick up gloss finishes if you don't. If you lick your brush, be prepared for a less than enjoyable taste.

^^ Might be time to stop licking the brush, then.
