Long story short, a donkey cave saying donkey cave things on twitter and youtube got banned from all official Wizards of the Coast tourneys, and had thousands of dollars of his online account seized. What he did technically wasn't in violation of their user agreement, regardless of how tasteless it was.

This guy, and his followers, are now out for a little WotC blood. Within hours of looking they found a number of registered pedophiles/ sex offenders that are listed as official judges for Magic tourneys. They provided links and screenshots of the sex offender registry to back this up. They also pointed out that in most states where the major tourneys are held, the law states that if minors are in attendance the judges must have a criminal background check done on them. The official response from WotC and their judge program is that they have no intent to implement this. (Screenshots of the emails were provided).

I'm currently at work, thus have no access to YouTube, or else I'd provide links. The guy's YouTube handle is the Quartering. Overall I find this guy rather abhorrent, but in this case it does raise some questions.

Banning him and seizing his virtual assets saved them money.

Running criminal background checks, and the negative publicity it would generate will cost them money.

They'll eventually cave on the background checks if the backlash for not doing them costs them more than the background checks.

If its a legal requirement I'd have thought they'd have run the background checks; considering that Wizards are not a small time company new to this. Even if it wasn't a legal requirement I'd have thought they'd have done it as part of their general policy.

That are these events 100% official events being run by Wizards of the Coast or are they events being run by independents who are just buying the "tournament kit" from Wizards.

From what I understand, one group has been awarded the legal rights to run all official Magic tourneys and events and they are officially recognized by WotC as the sole holder such rights. WotC supports them with product and financial support.

Information on this seems kind of limited and the main source that comes up is a video by the who got banned, have they managed to find proof of anything? Or just a list of people with the same name as a judge on the sex offender list (which you can get on for many other reasons, btw)? Are these "judges" important people in charge of major events, or are they random players who took an online judge test to be qualified to judge their local 4-person FNM?
