Hello fellow hobbists,

as many others here, i recently picked up my LOTR minis once again, getting ready for the 3.0 rules of our beloved game.
To get back in the hobby i started a small Mordor warband, which i wanted to be mainly composed of human/wraithlike creatures: a ringwraith, some castellans of Dol Guldur, Black Numenoreans, Swamp Ghosts, Morgul Knights and a hanful of dakked up orks (Black Guard of Barad dur and such).

I really wanted to make Black Numenoreans (BN) the core of my warband, but as for many others, those models are just 3 sculps, which can become really monotonous and repetitive if fielded in large numbers.
Given that i can try some conversion work, im here asking your help in finding some third party miniatures which could make up for the lack of GW variety in the LOTR range, concerning such pieces.

The idea is to try and find models, even sold individually or small numbers, which would not look out of place alongside the current BN models. This mainly consists in having some sort of heavy/spikey armor and/or some cloth, basically knights but with that "Mordorish" look.

Note that i will be happy for any suggestion, even if that implies a bit of conversion work. To give you an example, those Mantis miniatures models could do for some BN with 2h swords, after i add some capes, drapes and hoods:

http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/kings-of-war/undead/product/undead-soul-reaver-infantry-troop.html

I really hope GW makes up for the heavy lack of variety for LOTR models, since alot of units have just 2-3 sculps, which takes alot of interest away from the "artistic" aspect on the game, imho. Until then, lts unite to give our armies the best look with all the resources the Internet offers us =)

Thanks for any help!

One thing you could possibly try with GW models is to convert the old last alliance Numenoreans - a bit of greenstuff chain mail to cover up the white tree symbol, some sword swaps, plus a dark, mordor-ish paintscheme could look effective. After all, you'd expect the black Numenoreans to share some design similarities with their non-evil cousins.

If you're very handy with GS, you might even add armour and helmets inspired by the Witch King, or the other ringwraiths.
The only real issue with the old Numenorean sculpts is, again, a lack of pose variety - maybe you might be able to do something with the Lake Town guard models?

I'm afraid I'm not very familiar with any other ranges, but you're certainly not the first person I've heard of looking for a Black Numenorean alternative - there must be something out there!

The new Nazgul of Dol Guldur coming from Forge World, based on how the Nazgul looked in half-corporeal form in The Battle of the Five Armies, look perfect for Black Numenoreans. I'll be buying some to use in that fashion!

This is a fairly expensive route, but buying Morgul Knights and converting them might be an option.

Hey there,

thankks for the input. Its a good advice and i also like the old alliance Numenoreas models although they may be quite old. My only concern in using such models is that they are very different from the actual BN models, which i already own. This is a recurring problem since the original BNs are very peculiar sculpts, and i doubt they would look the same "unit" once fielded.. so this leaves me with just 2 options:

- using old alliance models with some conversions/sculpting as BNs, leaving the "original" BNs out, which could be fine, although i'd miss that spikey, mordorish look which got me back into the game with this warband

- finding models which can actually look, after some trim, as "the same unit" as the original BNs, which is the best option but also the most difficult to achieve.

I'm also considering a side option, recasting the bulk of the original BN and adding recasted arms/swords/heads with a bit of sculpting to create new poses and combinations. This would give me the best result, but the huge time and work required is not very appealing.

Thanks anyway for the suggestions, they will help me make up my mind about this issue

Thanks for the advice buddy, yes i just saw them today.. they are AMAZEBALLS!!! I may end up doing so, but as yu said its a goddamn expensive option, and still they wuld suffer abit of the same problem since they are just 3 sculpts so i would add 3 more models to the existing 3 (4 with the mouth of sauron), and also they look slightly more OP then standard BNs, but thats a minor issue.

Morgul Knights will be in my list 100% as soon as they come back in stock, but they are mounted so i dont really see how to convert them easily to infantry troops.. i dont remember how the sprue is divided, if the torso is eaily separated from the legs i could surely try that way, whiich would also be very good looking! If anyone has some pics or assembled them and wanted to share this info, that'd be great (insert meme).
Really hope that FW releases some troops for LOTR and not just heroes/characters.. for nazghuls we have already like 3-4 variants for a model that can be fiended 9 max in any army, but we got 3 sculpts for models which have to be fielded in the tens...

That is just the first three-pack! There's at least four more sculpts, possibly six more, coming for the Nazgul of Dol Guldur. so at least fielding a Black Numenorean warband in WOTR, with the Nine Dol Guldur sculpts, plus three previous ones, and the Mouth, gives you a warband at least.

Some have converted the Guardians of the White Gate and Servants of Heaven with Spears from Lucifer's War (snip helmet wings, add spikes, green stuff ridges, etc) http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/index.php?route=product/category&path=192_71_123

I've attached shots of the first of three Nazgul of Dol Guldur packs (confirmed as three packs of three by Adam Troke). The first pack, pictures here, contains the Witch King, Dark Headsman, and a Slayer of Men.

God those models are truly awesome, i hope they will not be extremely expensive.. will buy them anyway probably =) They are very suitable as BNs indeed, lets see until all 9 are released, anyway ill keep looking for any other cheaper alternative around to form the bulk of the army!

Other than the Lucifer's War minis I linked above, a VERY expensive route would be to use the Morgul Knight heads on Warriors of the Dead bodies.

Of course since Black Numenoreans are really just bad guy Dunedain, it could be that the Mouth of Sauron is just an armored BN, while the rest look relatively normal. It would make sense, leading Corsairs and whatnot, raiding Gondorian ports, in which case any kind of fantasy human would work.

For my Black Numenorians on foot I bought a box of Warriors of the Dead and painted them "alive".

It's cheap and with a piece of bark from my backyard to elevate one model and the banner of the Morgul Knight boxed set for another I also got a command group out of it.
