We are currently engaged in a 40k Dark heresy 1st Ed with all expansion variables including dark crusade campaign.

The situation currently facing the party is semi dire.

We have a tech priest, priestess, arbite, scum and assassin. All level 5.

At rim of imperium - we were tasked with investigating the disappearance of an inquisitor. We were offered a lift with imperial forces heading to the planet - party declined to arrive in more style with a rogue trader who owed the party a favor for releasing them from prison.

On arriving, discover that imperium forces were destroyed by tau blockade. Planetary forces undermanned and with provisions enough to last approximately a month. Tau have planetary invasion force in orbit and waiting for chance to invade - assassin suggests alternative to combat may be investigated to buy time.

Population of planet treated poorly by imperium - approaching revolt. Tau stealth suits found during investigation to be operating on planet. Local population armed. Tau infiltrators already present. Outlook - not good :(

Tau offer to let imperials leave planet in peace. Arbite and priestess want to fight to the death. Residue of party don't feel like dying. Suggestion - can an imperial world be "leased" to an alien faction so long as they maintain the imperial tithe and administer imperial law?

Any input would be appreciated, especially if it can be supported by something - our party is divided as on one hand so long as imperial law is maintained and the tithe is paid then it is irrelevant who governs and on the otherhand xenos should not be suffered. The party is split 3/2.

Thanks in advance for any feedback

The Imperium is far more likely to pull out entirely - possibly firebombing the place from orbit if they don't think they can counterattack quickly - than work out any sort of deal where an alien empire even seems to be governing one of their worlds. That's a pretty big no-no, even for those members of the Ordo Xenos with a more Radical bent.

Having said that, there's a lot to be said for 'retreat and live to fight another day', so long as there isn't a Commissar watching. Why would the Tau agree to continue letting the planet supply and serve the Imperium, so long as they got to run day-to-day operations and operate freely? What's their game here? In the past, the Tau empire has been more than happy to to outright conquer planets...so why not this time? Clearly, the acolytes are on the verge of uncovering some sort of sinister xenos plot, and escaping to inform their master of the situation and gather additional forces is far more important than making a suicidal last stand. They're in the Inquisition, after all. That's their job. Let the Guard and Navy do whatever they want, so long as the information returns to someone who can do something with it. Traitors will be dealt with accordingly upon the Imperium's return.

At least, that's how I'd spin it to the hardliner elements of the party, if I was playing.

Wasn't that the plot of one of the Cain novels?

Thank you very much for the replies.

A little more information might assist:-

Planet was resettled by Imperium 200 years ago. The indigenous human population are treated like slave labour.

Tau have infiltrated some time in the past - stealth suits and humans who follow the Tau way. Local population is sympathetic to tau approach as they promise something better than slavery.

Currently, Tau ships are in orbit blockading the planet - noone can leave or arrive without their permission. Not even the acolytes.

Some ships on planet but not enough to evac and no warships.

The single astropath on planet is burnt out and not capable of sending a distress signal capable of being received in the imperium.

Tau offered to let the imperium forces leave the planet and they would then take control - response by party was if they wanted the native population they could take them off planet (as we would have to deal with traitors anyway). Tau went off to consider this.

IF reinforcements are coming they are many months away but as no message can be transmitted this is not expected.

Imperial forces cannot withstand a siege (food supplies very low) and lack equipment (anti tank) for taking on Tau battlegroup.

Cadet commissars are on planet. A junior commissar was around but he insulted the assassin, now he isn't around anymore.

Current assessment is:-

If planet fights - imperium loses - planet lost - PDF & guard units lost
If we surrender - imperium loses - planet lost - PDF & guard units saved
If we lease planet - tau give imperium something until an imperium battlegroup arrives - planet retained/lost - PDF & guard units saved

We are trying to find a way that doesn't involve a last stand TPK or getting shot on return to inquisition.

At level 5, I wouldn't have thought your PCs would have any input into the decision to surrender the planet or otherwise. However, since they appear to have responsibility beyond their years, then the response of the Inquisition is up to you; use it as a reward for good roleplaying (i.e. if the others manage to convince the hardliners through good play that escaping is the better option, then let them get away with it). Alternatively, escaping into the hills and rallying resistance in a guerrilla war against the Tau occupiers is always an option.

So, do you know what happened to the Inquisitor?

Easy E, investigation revealed the Inquisitor was taking a hardline approach to dealing with the Tau.

Military commander of planet had a platoon of guardsman escort the Inquisitor into the frozen wasteland just outside the outer limits of the city and executed.

The guardsman who conducted the execution were themselves executed after reporting back their success.

Military commanders reason was that the Tau were prepared to let the imperials leave but the Inquisitors wanted to stand and fight the Tau, refusing to negotiate. Commander assessed this military situation as a forgone conclusion and in order to salvage his forces orchestrated the assassination.

Party uncovered this on arrival through use of a telepath.

Military commander placed under arrest and currently party is discussing how to conduct his execution - we have sent for the planetary second in command to assume control in the interim.

Telepath unfortunately now has a slanesh daemon in them (perils) - the assassin in the party knows but noone else does as he was confronted 1 on 1 - made deal to leave corrupted telepath on planet to mess with Tau in order to keep the truth of the telepaths condition secret. Regrettably the telepath was a stand alone character for a friend who wanted to play a session of dark heresy.
