Can anyone give me a few rough ideas of how they'd put together a death guard army that's close combat focused?

I'd go for a max unit of plasma blightlords with a couple of flails supported by Typhus, 1 - 2 rhinos packed with cc plague marines and biologus each, 1 - 2 DPs to hand around rerols and cast blades of putrefaction on either termies or plague marines, a couple of min cultists units for home scoring and area denial... then fill in gaps to your liking )))

max poxwalker lists are fine, but I find them boring to play with...

Poxwalkers as your frontline chaff/screen - Blight Lords with basic load out and flails and Deathshroud dropping in alongside a LoC - run Typhus in with your footsloggers.

I run a big blob of Plague Marines with 2 flails, 2 Blight Launchers, a double Knife guy (for the Icon) and fill out the rest with Axes or double Knives - support with a Tallyman, a psyker (I use a Plaguecaster) and stratagems. Cloud of Flies them up the board and have fun. Not very competitive, but it's a good laugh.

Fast combat threats help - Mortarion, Fleshmower Drones, Spawn etc etc

I have a beautiful squad of the new CC plauge Marines to ride in a rhino and for their costs I always wish I had just taken blightlords instead.

For more mobile elements, the bloat drone with fleshmower or some plague marines with flails and knives in a rhino could work well. Don't forget demon princes of course, still pretty nasty.

For tougher elements, deathshroud and blightlords rarely get a charge off the turn the deepstrike but they are hard to knock out. Poxwalkers moving down the field are slow but tough, particularly with some buffs, though arguably plaguebearers do this better particularly post demon codex.

Plague Drones are also a very useful addition to an assault Nurgle army. Anything with some speed will help, and they're tough too. I'd definitely take Bloat Drones and Plague Drones if I were building your list. They can both (currently) benefit from the loci and Epidemius as well

I also find max pox walkers lists boring.

I've been debating how to build my blightlords. On one hand plasma is always useful and definitely benefits from the extended rapid fire range, but alternatively melta lets you advance and fire still to get into combat just a little bit sooner maybe.

I have alot of leftover Spawn I used to escort Biker Lords in 7th, they do well enough with their damage 2 attacks. Daemon Princes are still out best brawler. Buffed up Pox Walkers with VOTLW should work well for cheap (minus the cost of Typhus).

With melta, it's a pain to get in range of a worthy target more often than not, more so if there's a proper screening in place... and I hate seeing enemy units just clear out of range next turn, while shooting my 500pts worth blightlords... I go for plasma for range, in the first place

Ah, so the thought is at least you'll always be in range to put the hurt on something, in case placement doesn't allow for a good chance of getting into melee immediately. Makes sense.

I didn't think about spawn, they're not great, but not bad looking. they're crazy cheap so charging a couple across to target saturate sounds good.
