Had a discussion in the Lists section over a guys list whom had 5 detachments in a 2k points list. Looking at the BRB, pg 214 "recommends" maximum 3 detachments for 2k points. I believe my area stipulates 3 max in our tournaments as well.

So what are people seeing at organized events; do they follow the suggestions of the BRB, or do they allow unlimited detachments?

Almost all tournaments use the 3 detachment rule, the only times I've ever seen more than that is when that was one of the main features of the event OR a WAAC player tricking a newish TO into letting him go full cheeselord.

Well, we have organized a tourney at the 1500 pt level.
We didnt allow FW, special characters, and models with more than 16 wounds.
No restriction on detachments.

Well once you cut out characters and all the super models... kind of makes a detachment limit moot unless your IG. I don't wanna imagine what IG can do with unlimited detachments...

As far as I can see 3 is the normal number.

A Song of Ice and Fire - House Greyjoy.
AoS - Maggotkin of Nurgle, Ossiarch Bonereapers & Seraphon.
Bloodbowl - Lizardmen.
Horus Heresy - World Eaters.
Marvel Crisis Protocol - Avengers, Brotherhood of Mutants & Cabal.
Middle Earth Strategy Battle game - Rivendell & The Easterlings.
The Ninth Age - Beast Herds & Highborn Elves.
Warhammer 40k  - Tyranids.

Our area uses ITC rules so whatever that does is what they do.

3 at 1500. Probably will remain 3 when we go to 2K.

We play with 3 - we tend to follow ITC guidelines in most capacity.
