Hello all,

Having been holding out for an FW Praetor sculpt for my VI legion and subsequently been disappointed with the release we received, I've been looking into building my own. I honestly thought I had my conversion figured out, ordered all the bitz, etc (planning a Cataphractii Praetor with frost claw and frost sword to give him a greater gravitas than my power/artificer armoured Centurion, but set him apart from my axe and claw wielding Varagyr) and then I had another look at the Legion Praetor rules in the Age of Darkness Army Lists book and realised I'm an idiot.

The Inferno book rules the following:

* That any model with a power weapon may upgrade it to a frost weapon (sword, axe, greataxe, claw).

The Age of Darkness Army List book rules the following:

* Any Praetor in Artificer Armour comes stock with a bolt pistol and chainsword/combat blade but 'may exchange their bolt pistol and/or chainsword/combat blade for one of the following' and lists a bunch of single handed weapons, including pistols (volkite serpanta), the generic 'power weapon' option and specific power weapons (fists, thunder hammers, single lightning claw, etc)
* A Praetor in Terminator Armour comes stock with a combi-bolter and generic power weapon but 'may exchange their power weapon for one of the following' and lists some speciality power weapons or 'may exchange both their power weapon and combi-bolter for the following' and lists pair of lightning claws

Does this mean the following:

* A Praetor in Terminator Armour may only have a single power weapon, unless it is twin lightning claws.
* A Praetor in Artificer Armour may swap one or both of their weapons for one or two of the below weapon options, meaning they could realistically swap their bolt pistol and chainsword for two power weapons
* A Space Wolves model may only upgrade to a frost weapon from a generic 'power weapon', thus one cannot take two lightning claws on the Terminator Praetor and upgrade them to a pair of frost weapons.

Am I right in my assessment of these rules, or has there been an FAQ on this that I've missed?

As I read it you're correct.

A Song of Ice and Fire - House Greyjoy.
AoS - Maggotkin of Nurgle, Ossiarch Bonereapers & Seraphon.
Bloodbowl - Lizardmen.
Horus Heresy - World Eaters.
Marvel Crisis Protocol - Avengers, Brotherhood of Mutants & Cabal.
Middle Earth Strategy Battle game - Rivendell & The Easterlings.
The Ninth Age - Beast Herds & Highborn Elves.
Warhammer 40k  - Tyranids.

Completely correct. Only a Praetor in artificer armor can properly duel-wield specialist weapons, whereas one in terminator armor cannot.

Thanks guys.

Looks like I'm going to convert the Catiphractii Praetor into a Sergeant for my Varagyr and stick with the Artificer Armour for my legion's big boss guy then. At least that way I can still use him with the Bloodied Claws ROW if I want.

As others have said.

Equipping any Space Wolf model in Terminator armor negates a lot of your Legion Specific rules, and I have to ask- do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? I have to say no.

True enough, but every legion has Terminators - Space Wolves inclusive. My 30K army is more of a fun, fluffy collection of cool models to me than anything I'd consider playing competitively and Cataphractii armour does a great job of making a model look important.

That being said, I had my heart set on a Praetor dual wielding melee weapons, so I guess I'm going to save the Cataphractii armour for the bodyguard of Russ after all.
