This might be a bit silly, but imagine this situation:

Enemy units moving up to charge your stationary guns, but you have one round of movement/shooting before his next turn when he actually tries to pull of the charge.
So, in a moment of cheesy genius you place one of your airborne fliers in his path.

Avvording to RAW, he must now move and /or charge around the base of your flier at a minimum distance of 1", which could mess up his charge ( depending on how far away he was, model placement, etc. ).

Or can he move through the flier's base ( as it is actually up in the air ), as long as he doesn't end up on it ( as was the case in 7th)???

Really interested in this, cause it would make some extra cheesy tactics - thinking like 2 fliers block a charge like 90% of the time...

The first one. The flyers base will block the enemy since they can't charge it or move within 1" unless they can FLY.

Of course if it's activated a hovering mode to stay there, it will lose the immunity to being charged. Otherwise it will have to move next turn.

RAW the unit must move around the flier - unlike the flier itself they have no rule allowing them to move over other models. It's counter intuitive because obviously the flier and ground unit are separated by some vertical distance and shouldn't interfere with one anothers movement. Personally I wouldn't enforce what seems like a cheese move on an opponent.

I find it interesting that the Flyers with Airborne (and typically with the giant see through flyer stick base) DON'T have the same stipulation that Hover tanks do. That you measure distances from the hull, and not the base.

Because they have a substantial base. Hover tanks like the Falcon have a tiny base that would be silly to measure to and from.

This is true, but 8th edition is rather heavy of fluffy stuff. As the OP mentioned a model with Airborne, is in the air. It would make more sense that any model can move through the Airborne models base.
Of all the fluff not to include the fact you can move around underneath a flying jet is kind of a weird omission.
