Hello all,

I just picked up 40k. My first game will be on Tuesday. Thanks to a sale at the local gaming store I was able to pick up a squad of terminators and a dread for only 40 bucks. So also grabbed a second squad of termies and a captain in terminator armor.

So here is the list:

HQ: 123 points, Captain in terminator armor with power sword and storm bolter.

Elites:
Dreadnought: melee weapon with storm bolter and multimelta. 139 points

Terminators: power sword x1, power fist x4, storm bolter x4, heavy flamer x1 207 points

Second terminator squad is the same except the heavy is an assault cannon instead of the heavy flamer. 212 points. I may give 2 of them chain fists just to bring my points up to 700.

Like I said, this list mainly happened because I got great deal on the models. Any tactic advice or advice for adding units is appreciated.

Have you built them? because your loadouts would ideally include those missile launchers for some long distance shooting.
Not to mention the ability to throw out mortal wounds.

Likewise; if you have the option; stick a Twin-Lascannon on that dreadnought

The list should do okay as is; but if you can push the points up a little those tweaks would give you more threat in general.

Tactics wise you could do worse than to keep the captain near the dreadnought; especially if its a multimelta as that 1 shot will more than likely require reroll support

Built yes, but everything is magnetized, so I can change things around. The loadout for the dread is all I have, it was an original box from 1995, and it only came with 2 arms.

I was torn between deep striking the captain with terminators or keeping him back, but you make a valid point. The multimelta is the only weapon on the list that only gets one dice.

If I were you I would keep the captain back with the dreadnought and 1 unit of terminators as a castle of sorts, then slowly advance them up the board.... the other unit can deep strike in to support the castle if your opponent rushes head on into you, drop down near an objective if necessary; or ideally attack an isolated support unit.

I know it's not to everyone's taste; but I would HIGHLY recommend picking up some alternate dreadnought arms. they're quite cheap online. remember if the dreadnought moves it's 3+ becomes a 4+ to hit... do you really want to be flipping a coin? (upgrading to a venerable dreadnought would make it a 2+/3+ on the move.)

going forwards I might recommend your army choice so far would gain a lot out of the getting started space marines box set. this would give you some extra dread arms; a second dreadnought, some cheaper tactical bodies for objectives/ not getting tabled/ opening the option to hold more units off the board turn 1... and of course another terminator captain; which would probably be redundant, but resale/trading with other players may get you a little something back. (feel free to discard this advice, just a thought as the value is phenomenal in those boxes)

Also I'm not sure what your plan is so far as Chapter Tactics are? but I would recommend either Iron Hands or Salamanders. The FNP save afforded by IH would increase the durability of your low body count list; but salamanders would give a single re-roll per unit, per shooting phase; I'm looking at that melta-dread
Hope this has helped?

So I played this list and actually survived 5 rounds, well the captain, dread, and one terminator did. I followed your advice and kept the captain with the dread, which helped a lot. It was a good learning experience in terms of gameplay. My opponent just had way too much concentrated firepower, IG, and he used hunter killer missiles to kill my terminators. I have expanded on this list for an upcoming tournament:

You did well brother; impressive performance, IG are a real pain against elite forces, volume of fire eventually breaks down those high armoured units, and hunter killers are a cheap upgrade... each time a missile kills a 'nator he turns a profit in points, and kills a significant body.

What chapter tactics did you run dude?

I'mma head over to your other thread now; Please don't take offense if my criticism seems harsh; I just want to help a fellow astartes
