So I've recently been really enamored with Age of Sigmar. I've not really had a lot of luck picking an army though, and I'd like a second (or third) opinion. For now, I plan on doing 1000pts and seeing where I expand to, from there.
My choices thus far are: Dispossessed, Fyreslayers, and Chaos Dwarfs.
Of all three armies, I like all or at least most of all of the models, so that's not really the defining problem. The issue is that the pros/cons that I've come up with don't weigh that hardly against one another for me to be able to make a clear-cut answer.
Dispossessed: Great army aesthetic, Ironbreaker/Longbeard kits+heroes are amazing. Warrior/Thunderer models are old and lackluster. Only has one gimmick in the pickaxe move, rest of their rules are largely just rerolls and generic junk. Little to no support aside from GW, but they get mentioned in fluff now and again, and they did get allegiance abilities in GHB2017. Rather cheap to start, even without a Start Collecting box, with lots of alternate non-GW models. If I were to start a Dispossessed army, I would likely take something like the Tempest's Eye allegiance and slap as many cannons/Gyrocopters/etc that I could, to make up for the boringness, running it as sort of 'Kharardron-lite' sort of army. I'm not fond of Kharadron models, for the record.
Fyreslayers: I love the look of Slayers but I'm a bit upset with how the Fyreslayers models look. They're all naked dwarfs that look pretty similar to one another. It looks like the whole army blends into itself. Very strong competitively and widespread 'fun' rules. New army, getting full support from GW. Very expensive to start aside from the Start Collecting box. They very largely rely on Vulkite Berserkers, with 60+ not being surprising in a 2000pt list. I sort of abhor horde armies in general, so this is very much a 'con'. You could probably run without a lot of them, but you would be gimping yourself.
Chaos Dwarfs: Holy gak they're expensive. Forgeworld Resin puts them an easy $200 more than the other two armies. That being said, of the two, I think they have the most balance rules for 'fun' and 'competitive'. They're not overpowered and have a lot of units to work with. In a lot of ways, they work how Dispossessed -should- what with large blocks of infantry, gunners, and then warmachines in the back with an engineer nearby. Of the two, this is the only one I've sort of decided a theme for, but it's tentative at best as 'Tzeentch pledged Chaos Dwarfs' so I can use some daemons or Tzaangors somewhere down the line. So far not getting any support or relevance from GW or FW, nor have they any sort of fluff mention (well there was that one in the KO book). No chance of full army removal, but is largely a legacy army in the same vein as Dispossessed, for now.
What do you think? Should I spend the extra money and go for Chaos Dwarfs, even if they're not relevant? Should I choose Fyreslayers since they're a brand new army with lots of GW support? Should I pick the classic Dwarfs and do my own thing with an Engineering themed Hold?
