I haven't played since the Lotr first came out so it has been a very long while. I'm mostly interested in Uruk-hai, probably isengard. I like the look of them more than any of the other evil factions but I'm not sure where would be a good place to begin, it seems like a vast majority aren't available from GW currently either?

you should be fine building Isengard, especially if the Uruks are your thing. I think they are a good solid army especially with pikes and crossbows. There is plenty of options with whats on the webstore as well. how big of games are looking for?

Eventually I think it would be fun to play a few epic "helms deep" battles but mostly interested in just quick throw down skirmish games. The Models that really catch my eye are the berserkers, Isengard trolls and the rank and file armored uruks swords/pikes with shields.

Yeah, you should be very well served with whats available and there are even cheaper ways to get big lots of those guys (the trolls and beserkers are gonna be a little more pricey) but you can get warriors easy.

Okay awesome, I appreciate it. what would you suggest as an early purchase or beginning force?

warriors for sure,. then a command box, if you are playing "competitively" or just using the warband rules its 12 warriors per hero, so even 2 boxes of warriors for 1 box of commanders is a solid force. mix in an order of berserkers and crossbows.

Isengard is super duper easy to start and really fun to play.

I would happy recommend these purchases:

Uruk-Hai Scouts
Uruk-Hai Warriors
Uruk-Hai with Crossbows
Uruk-Hai Berserkers

Ugluk and Vrasku
Mauhur
Isengard Commanders

That should give you plenty to start with - a warband of scouts led by Mauhur (who buffs their speed), Vrasku leading the Crossbowmen (maybe with scout bows shielding them), an Uruk Captain and Ugluk leading a couple warbands each with some warriors, pikes, and berserkers, with one warband having the banner to let you reroll duel rolls.

It'll look awesome and it's easy to expand from by adding a troll and another box o' warriors!

Lurtz is tricky, in that he's not much better than a regular captain, but lacks some of the options - however, taking him will not cripple your list. Just don't expect him to do much more than a basic captain.

Sharku is good if you want a mounted hero - extra might is always good, and he's cheap, points-wise. Compared to an Orc captain on warg, I'd say he's easily better.

If you're unsure, you might try using counts-as to trial a few heroes before buying, so you can find the ones that fit best.

Isengard Trolls are interesting. There's some debate over whether they're thematic, which I won't go into. They are tough, and can do some damage, but you may find that for the points, more Uruks will be better.

Berserkers are good fun, and the rank-and-file Armoured Uruks are one of the key strengths of the army - they are tough to kill, and can deal good damage. Also, crossbows are nasty, high-strength shooting, and if the enemy gets into combat with them, crossbowmen still have the uruk stats, so they're no "squishy archer" unit.

In terms of Heroes, Uruk Captains are very versatile - Heavy armour and a Shield make a real tank of a unit. Saruman can also be a lot of fun to play, but really only fits into a higher points value army.

At any rate, welcome to the service of the White Hand!

The plastic Uruk Hai (pikemen and swordsmen) make a great core for a Isenguard list. AFAIK, they are still available from GW, and since they were in the old Two Towers box set they are easy to find on the second hand market, too.

The Uruk Hai Berzerkers (2-handed weapon) are nice, although most players seem to prefer the Feral Uruk Hai (two hand weapons). The problem is that these figures are OOP and very hard to find, and cost a lot when you do find them.

As I don't think anyone has mentioned him, I think that Saruman is well worth taking, if you want some magic muscle.

Rumor has it that currently OOP models will eventually cycle back into stock with the new "Middle-earth: (LotR+ Hobbit) rulebook coming out later this year so I wouldn't let OOP models deter you from getting into this game.

not just rumor, Adam Troke himself said that their goal is to have a model available for every profile in the books, and that they have released and re-released planned for every few weeks. (Most of the release slots have been taken up by new product, such as Forge World, and by repackaging existing products into new skus at a discount, such as the new Hobbit 2-packs and Hobbit finecast warbands)

I really hope so, even though I already spent more a lot money than I should have buying OOP miniatures and trying to fill all the holes in my collection. Before they announced the renewed focus on Middle Earth, a lot of us players thought GW was just going to let the license expire so I was trying to get them while I could!
