Good Morning Folks,

I was wondering if there was a breakdown anywhere about how many points you get in the mega boxes. I have a new friend who is interested in KoW and I figured it would give me an excuse to buy and paint a crapload of models. The price is right, and the rules seem solid, but it's hard to gauge how much is needed to actually play and what the best purchases might be.

Any help would be huge!

Sure, but what I more meant was:

What's the best purchase to get started if you're interested in buying one of the mega deals?
What's a rough approximation of how many points those mega sets typically come with?

I've just gone over a couple (most of 'em, actually).

Include a character or two, most of which you'll want anyway (necromancers are an absolute must to play undead, and sorely lacking even from the mega army), and most of them will hit 1500. A couple of the more metal-heavy or hordey armies don't but they still get close.

In any case, it's enough to get a decent bunch of games in at a good level to start at, and you'll mostly just have to throw in a few monsters and characters to get to 2000.

IOW most of them are the majority of a complete army, even at 2500 (since the stuff you're missing is generally a handful of models, or maybe a cav unit or two). Once the mega deal is painted up most of the heavy lifting is done.

Mega boxes are what you should be aiming for, then flavor with additional bits as needed.

The newer boxes - Forces of the Abyss and Nature have very good sculpts and bang for the buck. The merfolk sculpts are great, and as is most of the Abyss demon line. Orcs/Goblins/Dwarves are showing their age, Orgres are hit/miss (Brave's are great), etc. The whole Mantic line is getting redone over the next year or so via kickstarters, so who knows where things will end up. I can say that the new resin characters are *fantastic* and wish everything had that level of quality.

Rules wise... KOW is great! Amazing how fast you can knock out a game with the multibase setup

Don't forget undead. Still up there in sculpt quality (most mini's, anyway ) and a really good base to start from. Also undead multibasing is extra fun to model with skellies rising from the ground etc, and it saves on a bunch of painting in the process.

Nature does get relatively expensive quite quickly if you want to expand into some of the resin units (although still affordable if you're used to GW, certainly). Abyss is another good one, that's true.

Their most recent kickstarter for Vanguard

Updates to Basilean (fixing the Men at Arms, new toons, etc) and Abyssals, new models for Twilight Kin, etc. All of these will make their way to the normal KoW box sets as they get produced - it's in one of their blogs from the Mantic events also.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Admittedly, I have a huge soft spot for Mantic. They're the underdog, slowly making their way in the world. I honestly feel they're making fantastic strides at improving their quality - and from a gameplay standpoint, I will flat out say KoW >>>>> Warhammer (Yeah I know, different game style - but just rules/style/speed - it wins hands down).

I like to throw them some coin wherever possible and champion their rulesets, but it is an uphill battle. Hell... I'd love to find someone else to play Dreadball with other than my co-worker :|

I backed vanguard, but I don't remember them saying that they are going to update all their army's. As a dwarf player that makes me happy, I hate their dwarf sculpts.

I never got to play Warhammer, but it was the game that got me interested in war gaming. I'm loving KoW rule set, just wish there was a lore I cared about.

Most vanguard new units are monopose, like for Dungeon Saga or The Walking Dead game, they are not exactly made to serve for whole units (well, of course you could, I remember someone who made a whole abyssal army using mainly Dungeon Saga mini), but they give however a nice preview of what is to come.

The exceptions are the basilean men at arms and the screcrows that will be hard plastic sprues useable directly for KoW.

@greenmutt24, rulewise KoW is the game that I always hoped Warhammer to be (and it was made by a former GW guy and later balanced by the Rule Comitee with feeback by the community).

The lore is still expanding, and I find that I rather like what is there, but if you like the game but not the world, nothing prevent you like many players to play in the world of your choice, there are many former Warhammer players that still play their old armies in the Warhammer world (before the destruction of the world of course)

The models they made are (according to one of those interviews) make their way into new KoW sprues. I will likely toss some of the characters into my current armies, backfill the rest as new plastic emerges. Until then, like always - throw in your WHFB minis and some reaper stuff, good to go

Yeah, I have no issues just doing typical Goblins v Dwarfs v Elves fantasy fights. Lore can enhance or detract from a setting, but lack of a specific lore for KoW doesn't bother me. I don't need to know some weird name for an idol that the two armies are fighting over, or have a socio-political reason. If I had a larger group of friends (or we had more armies) I think it would be fun to create a world/ fantasy history with evolving battles and their outcomes. But having said that while its fun to recreate 'historical' battles from the lore, I get that kick from Bolt Action right now.
