As the title says, at first I was very skeptical about AoS as I was a long time fan of WFB (5th edition), so it was painful to see a setting I had grown up with come to a sudden end.

Fast forward a few years, and I am now willing to give the setting a chance as I have come to see the quite frankly wonderful miniatures for the new imagined races come to light.

That and I am getting ever annoyed with the sheer glut of Marine variants in 40k.

So with that all said, if I were to start and wanted to get an idea of the background, but not wanting a Starter set (not a fan of the factions.) Where would be a good start?

The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.

I would recommend the realmgate wars as a good start and of course the battletomes. there was an original hardback AoS core book that had lore in it.

There would be a setting book coming out possibly this year so it should be your prime target. Other than that that the Realmgate wars books, various novels and batlle tomes. I should warn you that useful info is pretty scant though... The first hardback book Age of Sigmar has possibly the widest assortment of info, but honestly it is not a very good buy. Various novels could serve you better as they have been adopted as cannon and are regularly cited in lore disputes... If you wanted something right now I guess you could possibly get the first Age of Sigmar book and some novels - the legends of the age of sigmar series are generally a good pick. My advice would be to read all the wikis and just wait for the actual setting book because right now to get some kind of a picture out of AoS you have to pay through the nose for 2 tonnes of hardback books and novels....

Is there any lore in that 'Getting Started with Warhammer Age of SIgmar' book? The one that comes with a pushfit liberator?

Theres a couple of pages of history done as comic book panels, but its relatively scant and basic.

city of secrets is a pretty good book. goes more into the day to day lives of ordinary people than any of the other stuff before it.
